PIONEERS
EARN FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON IN SOCCER
DENTON,
Tex.—The Texas Woman’s
University soccer team (1-2-1) scored two goals in the
first half and held on for their first victory of the season
over Texas Wesleyan University (4-2), 2-0. The Pioneers
held the Lady Rams to just six shots while they registered
a season-high 27.
"I am excited about the win, but I was not very happy with the way our team
played. We were a little slow and sluggish on the field and played down to their
level," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "The team picked up their intensity
late in the first period and we scored two goals, but we need to be playing better
ball at this point in the season. Stephanie Stein did a good job up front for
us and Julie Hosek did another nice job of cleaning up on the defensive side
of the ball."
TWU
controlled the game from the start as they poured on 12 shots
in the first period, six on goal. Emily Meinen (Keller,
TX/Keller H.S.) put
the Pioneers on the board at the 33:53 mark when she headed a ball into
the goal off a cross from Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry
Creek H.S.). A little less than four minutes later, sophomore Stephanie
Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) put TWU up by two when
she scored her second goal of the season on a header with an assist from Melissa
Scott (Denton, TX/Denton H.S.). In the second half, TWU scattered
15 shots on the Texas Wesleyan defense, with eight on goal, but none of
them found the net and the game ended with the score sitting at 2-0.
"I was happy with the way I played today, but I think I could have put more
shots into the net. I am glad that I was able to come off the bench and provide
an offensive spark for this team," Stein said. "It
was good to get the win today and hopefully this will give us some momentum for
the rest of the season."
Ten
different Pioneers recorded shots during the game with Stein
and Romberg leading the team with six shots apiece. Starting
goalkeeper Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/ Prosper H.S.) earned the win after she went
the entire game and made four saves for her first shutout of 2003. TWU
had seven corner kick opportunities and were called for 12 fouls.
Up
next, the Pioneers host Incarnate Word on Sunday, Sept. 21
beginning at 1:00 p.m.
