PIONEERS
COME FROM BEHIND TO TIE DALLAS BAPTIST
DENTON,
TX—Trailing
Dallas Baptist (2-2-1) 2-0 after the first period of play,
the Texas Woman’s University (0-2-1) soccer team
rallied with two second-half goals to knot the game after
regulation. The Pioneers recorded seven shots in the two
overtime periods, but none of them found the back of the
net and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
"The team really found their rhythm in the second half and started pounding
the goal. Unfortunately, not all of our shots found the net and we ended the
game in a tie. Our entire team played well tonight, but Dallas Baptist improved
a lot from last year and gave us a great game," head coach Fleur
Benatarsaid. "Our intensity level was high throughout the game and they did a good
job of winning balls the entire game. Sara Weaver did a good job in the net for
us in the second half and Julie Hosek played great on the defensive side of things."
Dallas
Baptist put the pressure on early in the first period as
Amber Kincaid scored her first goal of the game at the 3:50
mark on a 10-yard shot right
in front of the goal. Kincaid recorded five shots, all coming the first
half. She gave the Patriots a 0-2 lead when she found the back of the net
again, this time on a quick break away with 36:16 showing on the clock.
TWU and DBU were almost even in shots during the first period with the
Pioneers recording eight and the Patriots chipping in with nine. TWU goalkeeper Stephanie
Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) made five saves in the
first period, but allowed two goals.
In
the second half, it was all TWU as the Pioneers kept the
ball on their half of the field and recorded 13 shots while
holding DBU to just two shots. Erica
Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) finally got TWU on the board
when she scored on a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Roughly 12 minutes
later, Stein directed a header into the net with an assist from Butler.
Both teams could not get a goal in the two overtime periods and the game
ended after 110 minutes of play with the score knotted at 2-2. The Pioneers
totaled 28 shots during the game and Stein and Sara Weaver (Prosper,
TX/Prosper H.S.) combined for six saves. TWU had 11 corner kicks
while the Patriots only received two chances. DBU finished with 11 shots.
Up
next, the Pioneers host St. Gregory’s University on
Thursday, Sept. 11 at 3:00 p.m. in their first home game
of the 2003 season. Then on Saturday,
Sept. 13, they host Texas Wesleyan University at Pioneer Soccer Field at 11:00
a.m.
