MESA
STATE DOWNS PIONEERS, 4-1, IN SOCCER
DENVER,
CO—The Texas Woman’s
University (0-2) soccer team dropped their second game
of the young 2003 season as Mesa State defeated
the Pioneers, 4-1. Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry
Creek HS) scored TWU’s first goal of the
season with 10 minutes left to go in the game.
"I was very disappointed in our girls because this was a team that we should
have beaten. The trip overall was very disappointing," head coach Fleur
Benatar said. "We picked up our play in the second half and finally got
a score late in the game. Sara Weaver played very well at goal for us in the
second period, making a lot of great saves."
Mesa
State came out firing in the first period, scoring three
goals against the Pioneers’ keeper Stephanie
Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest HS), and took
a 3-0 lead into the half. Sara Weaver
(Prosper, TX/Prosper HS) came in at goal with seven minutes
left to go until intermission and did not allow another goal until four
minutes left in the game. She finished with seven saves. Romberg stopped
a possible shutout when she scored her first goal of the season in the
80th minute with an assist from Stephanie Richardson (Duncanville,
TX/Duncanville HS). Romberg, Richardson, Erica Butler
(Burleson, TX/Burleson HS), Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/ Keller
HS) and Melissa Scott (Denton, TX/Denton HS) all
recorded shots in the game.
Up
next, the Pioneers face Dallas Baptist University in Dallas
on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m. They open up their home
schedule on Thursday, Sept.
11 vs. St. Gregory’s. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
