#5 METRO STATE DEFEATS TWU IN SOCCER SEASON OPENER

DENVER, CO—The fifth-ranked team in the country were rude hosts to Texas Woman’s University (0-1) in their season opener as Metro State (4-0) blanked the Pioneers, 7-0.

"The team fought hard today, we were just out-played. Metro State is a good team and they came out firing in the first half. Our girls were a little nervous playing in their first game of the year and the altitude also had an effect as well," head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We played better in the second half and began attacking more, but we couldn’t get the ball into the net. The pace of the game was a little faster than our players were expecting."

Metro State scored five goals in the first half to take a commanding leading into the break. The TWU defense could not get the ball sorted out in their own half of the field, which allowed the Roadrunners to capitalize early with some break away goals. MSC added two more goals in the second period to win 0-7. The Pioneers started attacking more in the second period and finished with eight shots for the game. Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson HS), Julie Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller HS), Melissa Scott (Denton, TX/Denton HS) and Mandy Lambert (The Colony, TX/The Colony HS) all took shots, but none were able to get the ball in the goal.

"Stephanie Stein did a nice job in goal even though she allowed seven goals. Luci Romberg also did a nice job after I moved her to defender. She saved us from getting more goals scored on us. Erica Butler woke up and played better in the second half and put some pressure on the Metro State defense," Benatar said.

Up next, the Pioneers have a day off before they face Mesa State on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played in Denver on the campus of Metro State.
