ANGELO
STATE DOWNS TWU,
2-0, IN SEASON FINALE
DENTON,
TXTexas Woman's University out-shot Angelo
State (7-8-2, 3-4-1 LSC), 20-18, but the Rambelles
used some aggressive play in wet conditions to score two goals
and win their second game of the season over the Pioneers.
TWU ends its inaugural season with an overall record of 5-10-2
and 0-7-1 in Lone Star Conference action.
Despite the conditions of the field, I thought the girls
played really well today, head coach Fleur Benatar said. Angelo
State is a good team and they capitalized on a couple of our
mistakes on defense to win the game.
It took both teams a while to get their footing because of
the extremely wet conditions of Pioneer Soccer Field. ASU notched
the first score in the 27th minute when Carrie Hughes
directed a ball back into the goal that TWU goalkeeper Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) deflected from a previous
shot. The Rambelles kept the pressure on during the first period,
recording 14 shots and receiving eight corner kick opportunities.
In the second half, it was TWU that went on the offensive charge,
recording 12 shots to ASU's four, but the Pioneers could not
find a score. The Rambelles put the game away in the 80th minute
when Sheri Champlin received an assist from Casey Halamicek
and scored on a one-on-one with TWU's goalkeeper 10 yards from
the left side of the goal. TWU ended the game with nine shots
on goal, any of which could have been scores. Luci Romberg
(Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) led the team with six
shots, three on goal, while three other Pioneers recorded three
shots apiece. Weaver finished the game with two goals allowed
and six saves.
I am very happy with how this first season went. In
the preseason, Lisa Etchison (assistant coach) and I didn't
know where this team was, but as the season progressed, they
started playing as a team and ended where I wanted them to
end, Benatar said. The gap is very narrow between
our team and the front-runners in our conference. I just need
to get out and recruit and bring athletes in who can turn this
team into a conference contender.
The Pioneers finished the 2002 season with 29 goals scored
off of 307 shots taken for a shooting percentage of .094. They
totaled 15 assists and 73 points and were good on all three
penalty kicks during the season. Angela Contreras (Irving,
TX/Irving H.S.) finished the season as the team leader
in goals scored (5) and tied for the team lead in points (11)
with Luci Romberg. Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson
H.S.) was the team leader with 50 shots this season while
she, Romberg and Melissa Scott (Denton, TX/Denton H.S.) tied
for the team lead with three assists apiece. The Pioneers recorded
three shutouts this season and held opponents scoreless for
a 232-minute stretch.
