PIONEER SOCCER FALLS TO EAST CENTRAL, 3-1

DENTON, TX—After the first period ended in a 1-1 tie, East Central (6-3-2, 2-0 LSC) used two second period goals to hand the Texas Woman's University (5-7, 0-4 LSC) soccer team their fourth straight loss in Lone Star Conference play. Angela Contreras (Irving, TX/Irving H.S.) recorded her team-leading fifth score of the season during the fourth minute of the game.

Both teams got on the scoreboard early as Hillary Conley of ECU received an assist from Jenny Cruz in the box and punched in the first goal of the game with 4:04 on the clock. Forty-eight seconds later, Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek HS) dribbled the ball down the left side and sent a cross towards the net allowing Contreras to direct the ball into the goal, knotting the game up at 1-1. Both defenses tightened and the first half would end in a tie. The Tigers came out firing in the second period, recording 12 shots compared to only four in the first frame. Baylea Funk broke the tie when scored an unassisted goal at the 58:25 mark. Roughly two minutes later, Semah Yekzaman put the game away for East Central when she scored on a header from Taiz Dirienzo's corner kick, making the score 1-3. The Pioneers recorded five shots in the second period, but none of them produced any goals.

TWU recorded 13 shots in the game, nine of them on goal while the Tigers had 16 shots and eight shots on goal. Meagan Wilson of ECU was the winning goalie with one goal allowed and eight saves while the Pioneers' Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) allowed three goals and turned in five saves. ECU had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-5, while TWU was flagged with 13 fouls compared to the Tigers eight. Contreras finished the game with one goal, four shots and three shots on goal while Romberg earned her second assist of the season. TWU's Melissa Scott (Denton, Tex./Denton H.S.), Julie Hosek (Keller, Tex./Keller H.S.) and Melissa Williams (Arlington, Tex./Lamar H.S.) each recorded two shots during the game.

Up next, the Pioneers have eight days to prepare for the ninth ranked team in the country when they travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, to face the University of Central Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002 starting at 1:00 p.m.
