TWU FALLS TO WEST TEXAS A&M IN SOCCER

CANYON, TX—West Texas A&M (6-2, 1-1 LSC) scored five goals in the first half and cruised to a 9-1 victory over Texas Woman's University (5-5, 0-2 LSC), handing the Pioneers their second straight conference loss. Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson HS) scored TWU's lone goal at the 48:55 mark of the second half, giving her two for the year.

“West Texas A&M has a great team. They are strong and fast at every position and played very well in the first half,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “We came out in the second half and started playing well about midway through the period, but it was too little too late. Erica Butler had a nice goal and had a chance at another one.”

West Texas A&M did not take long to put points on the board as goals by Whitney Cates and Kathy Clutterbuck put TWU in an 0-2 hole four minutes into the game. Clutterbuck added her second goal at the 13:31 mark, off of a free kick, and Jessica Rodriguez beat the Pioneers goalkeeper, Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/ Northwest H.S.), one-on-one to give the Lady Buffs a 0-4 advantage 25 minutes into the game. West Texas A&M added one score to end the first period and another just two minutes into the second frame to push their lead to 0-6. Butler put the Pioneers on the board in the 48th minute when she scored her unassisted goal. The Lady Buffs scored three more times in the second half to win the game 1-9.

TWU managed just three shots during the game, all coming in the second half. Butler had two shots on goal while Lacey Steinkamp (Sugar Land, TX/Clements H.S.) recorded the other shot. West Texas A&M totaled 23 shots with TWU's Stein making five saves and allowing nine goals, moving her record to 3-4 on the season. The Lady Buffs also had 13 corner kicks and were flagged with seven fouls while TWU made nine fouls.

Up next, the Pioneers continue their conference road trip as they travel to Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a start time of 2 p.m.
