PIONEER SOCCER SENDS
KANSAS WESLEYAN PACKING, 4-1
DALLAS,
TX--The
Texas Woman's University soccer team (5-3-0) put on an offensive
clinic against Kansas Wesleyan, recording a season-high 46
shots and scoring four times to beat the Coyotes 4-1. Angela
Contreras (Irving, TX/Irving H.S.) recorded a team-high
14 shots and turned in the third multiple goal game for
TWU this season with two
goals. She now has four goals this season to lead the team.
The
Pioneers were definitely the better team on the field as
they held Kansas Wesleyan to just three shots on the night
and kept the ball on the Coyotes half of the field for most
of the game. Contreras put the first point on the board six
minutes into the game when she received an assist from Melissa
Scott (Denton, TX/Denton HS) and connected on a shot
10 yards out on the right side of the goal. Then at the 22:45
mark, Contreras added her second goal of the night when she
deflected a Brittany Whorton (Flower Mound, TX/Middle
Tennessee St.) assist from inside the box. TWU was still
on the attack in the late stages of the first period when Stephanie
Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) received an assist
from Erin Steinkamp (Sugarland, TX/Clements H.S.) and
connected on a 20-yard shot that hit the right post and went
in the net, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead 41 minutes into
the game.
TWU came out aggressively in the second half, but had trouble
finding the net. Twenty one minutes into the frame, the Pioneers
took a 4-0 lead when Steinkamp recorded her first goal of the
season on a five-yard shot on the left side. The Pioneers' Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) had a shutout going
until the 80th minute when she misjudged Valerie Forsythe's
55-yard free kick, which bounced in front of the goal and landed
in the back of the net. Weaver finished the game with one save
and one goal allowed while her counterpart, Kristy Rogers turned
in 22 saves and four goals allowed. Melissa Scott turned in
two assists on the night while Erin Steinkamp finished with
a goal scored and an assist, good enough for three points.
The Pioneers had seven corner kick opportunities and were flagged
with 12 fouls. Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson H.S.) recorded
six shots on the night, four of them on goal.
Next
up, the Pioneers hit the road for their first taste of conference
action when they travel to Tahlequah, Oklahoma,
to face Northeastern State University on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at
1 p.m. TWU then plays West Texas A&M on Friday, Oct.
4 at 4 p.m. and Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 5 at
2 p.m.
