PIONEER SOCCER ROLLS
OVER DALLAS BAPTIST, 3-1
DENTON, TX--The
Texas Woman's University soccer team (4-3-0) scored three
goals in the first half and that was all
they needed to hand Dallas Baptist (3-6-1) their
sixth loss of the season. TWU is the fourth team from the Lone
Star Conference to beat the Lady Patriots this season. East
Central, Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State are the other
three teams to do so.
This game was a battle and we played very solid in the
first half. We got tired during the second half and the game
became a lot more physical and a lot tighter, head coach
Fleur Benatar said. It is good to come away with a win.
Now, we can look ahead to playing Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday
night and notching another mark in the win column.
It definitely looked like it was going to be the Pioneers
day as they took control of the opening kick and kept the ball
on the Dallas Baptist half of the field for most of the first
period. TWU racked up 16 shots in the first frame compared
to the Lady Patriots three. Angela Contreras (Irving, TX/Irving
H.S.) put the Pioneers on the board when she scored on
a header from a feed from Melissa Scott (Denton, TX/Denton
H.S.) at the 14:23 mark. Nine minutes later, Dallas Baptist
knotted the game up at 1-1 when Crystal Foster scored off of
a deflection in the Pioneer net. TWU quickly took the lead
again when Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest
H.S.) got an assist from Erica Butler (Burleson, TX/Burleson
H.S.) and scored from 10 yards out on the right side of
the goal at the 27:33 mark. After Dallas Baptist was flagged
with their eighth foul of the first period, Julie Hosek
(Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) sent a free kick from 45 yards
out into the goal, giving TWU their 3-1 lead.
The second half was a draw as both teams moved the ball deep
into each others territory, but walking away without any scores.
They each recorded nine shots during the frame with DBU's goalkeeper,
Sarah Webster, making two saves and TWU's goalkeeper, Sara
Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.), making five. Weaver
finished the game with seven saves and one goal allowed. The
Pioneers recorded 25 shots during the game, 13 of them on goal.
Stein's goal turned out to be the game winner and her first
of the season while Hosek and Contreras recorded their second
goals of the season.
Next
up, the Pioneers travel to Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Sept.
28 to face Kansas Wesleyan University on the campus of
Dallas Baptist. The start time has been moved back to 7:00
p.m. from the previously scheduled 5 p.m. start.
