PIONEER SOCCER LOSES
0-1 THRILLER TO ST. MARY'S
DENTON, TX--St.
Mary's (7-2-0) scored in the 34th minute of the first period
and that one goal turned
out to be all that they would need as the Rattlers held on
for a 0-1 victory against Texas Woman's University (3-3-0).
The Pioneers recorded more shots than St. Mary's during the
game, but could not get the ball to roll into the net.
I think overall, we had to better team on the field.
St. Mary's has been playing together longer than we have and
they moved the ball very well. We got a little confused about
their formations in the beginning, which hurt us, head
coach Fleur Benatar said. We got tired toward the end
of the game, but we had four golden opportunities to put the
ball in the net and could not convert.
St.
Mary's controlled the ball on the Pioneer half of the field
for the first 10 minutes and made two shots, but after
an offsides call on the Rattlers, TWU headed the other direction
and put some pressure on the St. Mary's defense. Julie Hosek
(Keller, TX/ Keller H.S.) and Angela Contreras (Irving,
TX/Irving H.S.) recorded the Pioneers first two shots
of the game with the Rattlers goalkeeper having to make the
save on Contreras' shot in the 13th minute. The game went to
a standstill as both teams had trouble getting the ball close
to each other's goal. St. Mary's broke the 0-0 tie when Tara
Smith scored her goal at the 34:54 mark from about 10 yards
out, with an assist from Hannah Fitzharris and Natalie Moore.
TWU went on the attack in the closing stages of the first period,
recording seven shots in the final 10 minutes, including three
shots by Brittany Whorton (Flower Mound, TX/Middle Tennessee
St.), one of which hit the top post.
The second half was a draw as both teams took turns taking
shots on goal. The Pioneers recorded five shots in the second
frame, three on goal, while St. Mary's had seven shots, two
of which were on goal. Whorton recorded the Pioneers final
shot of the afternoon in the 83rd minute when her shot from
the right wing sailed wide of the net. St. Mary's tried to
add another score in the final minutes, but Stephanie Stein
(Trophy Club, TX/Northwest H.S.) made two of her four
saves to end the game at 0-1. TWU had the advantage with 16
total shots while the Rattlers only totaled 11 during the contest.
St. Mary's was flagged with 22 fouls and two yellow cards while
the Pioneers had 17 fouls. Whorton led the Pioneers with six
shots, two on goal. Stein made four saves and allowed
one goal in her 90:00 minutes of play.
Next
up, the Pioneers host Dallas Baptist University on Thursday,
Sept. 26 with a start time of 4:00 p.m. They will travel to
Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 28 to face Kansas Wesleyan
University at 5 p.m. on the campus of Dallas Baptist.
