PIONEERS WIPE OUT
MARY
HARDIN-BAYLOR 7-0 IN SOCCER
DENTON,
TX--Mary
Hardin-Baylor (0-2-1) began its road trip with bus problems,
delaying the team
and the start of the game for over an hour, then had problems
figuring out how to score on the stingy Texas Woman's University
(3-2-0) defense. When the dust settled, the Pioneers handed
the Crusaders a 7-0 loss. Six different Pioneers scored goals
with UMHB giving TWU an own goal.
The
Pioneers started the scoring quickly when Lacey
Steinkamp (Fort Bend, TX/ Clements H.S.) recorded her
first goal of the season at the 2:22 mark when she drove
in from 20
yards out to make the score. Eleven minutes later, Breann
Morris (Waxahachie, TX/Waxahachie H.S.) found the back
of the net on her first goal of the season and received an
assist from Stephanie Richardson (Duncanville, TX/ Duncanville
H.S.). Then on the 22:43 mark, the Crusaders' Jennifer
Grieser was fighting to keep TWU from scoring a third time
when the ball bounced off of her leg and rolled into the
goal, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead. Melissa Scott (Denton,
TX/Denton H.S.) added a fourth score in the first period
with three minutes to play when she scored from the left
side of the net. TWU kept Mary Hardin-Baylor on their half
of the field for much of the first period, allowing the Crusaders
only two shots the entire 45:00 minutes.
Nine
minutes into the second half, Richardson scored on a penalty
kick, pushing the TWU lead to 5-0. She finished the
night with three points and four shots. Five minutes later, Julie
Hosek (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) became the fifth Pioneer
to record a score when she scored on the team's second penalty
kick of the night. UMHB's defense tightened up during the final
stages of the game and it wasn't until the 86th minute when Luci
Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) came in with
the games final goal, an unassisted effort from the left side.
The Pioneers finished with 34 shots during the game, 21 of
them on goal. TWU's goalkeepers made four saves on the evening,
three coming in the second half with Sara Weaver (Prosper,
TX/ Prosper H.S.) at goal.
Next
up, the Pioneers travel to Abilene, Texas, to face their
third Division III opponent of the season in McMurry University.
The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept.
20. Two days later, TWU host St. Mary's University on Sunday,
Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
