FALL TO NORTH TEXAS, 6-1, IN SOCCER
DENTON,
TX--The Texas Woman's University soccer team
(2-2-0) traveled across town to face Division I opponent North
Texas in their fourth road game of the 2002 season. Despite
the rain which fell on and off throughout
the game, the Pioneers held tough but loss to the Mean Green
1-6. Stephanie Richardson (Duncanville, TX/ Duncanville
H.S.) scored TWU's only goal in the 71st minute.
I am extremely proud of the way this team played today.
Anybody who came out to watch this game would never have realized
that this is a first year program, head coach Fleur
Benatar said. The team gave it their all during the entire game,
but we just ran out of steam in the final minutes because we
couldn't make as many substitutions as UNT could.
The
Pioneers kept UNT from scoring in the first period with some
great defense. Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, TX/Northwest
HS) and Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX/Prosper H.S.) made
five saves in the first period from 11 North Texas shots. The
Mean Green broke the 0-0 tie in the 52nd minute as Michelle
Portain connected on shot seven yards outside the box with
an assist from Marilyn Marin. Five minutes later, Marin connected
on one of her three goals, an unassisted effort 20 yards from
the goal, to give UNT a 2-0 lead. Marin would score two more
times, one in the 65th minute and the third in the 75th minute.
Richardson put TWU on the board in the 71st minute with a 20-yard
shot from the top of the box. UNT would add two more scores
in the final three minutes of play to win the game, 1-6. The
Pioneers had four close opportunities to make the game a little
closer, but two shots went off the crossbar and two went just
wide of the net.
The Pioneers recorded 11 shots on goal during the game with
three coming from Julie Hosek (Keller, Tex./Keller H.S.).
TWU had one corner kick opportunity and were flagged with 15
fouls where as the Mean Green had seven corner kicks and eight
fouls. UNT scored their six goals from 26 shots and their two
goalkeepers made four saves. Sara Weaver made 11 saves during
her 67 minutes of play for the Pioneers.
Next
up, the Pioneers host their first home game on Friday, Sept.
13 vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5 p.m.
