PIONEER SOCCER EARNS
SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
DENTON, TX--The Texas Woman's University soccer team
(2-1-0) traveled south to Kerrville, Texas, and handed Schreiner
University (0-3) a 4-0 loss. Three different Pioneers scored
in the victory with senior Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry
Creek H.S.) walking away with two unassisted goals, her
first scores of the season.
We came out flat again in the first half and really
didn't get going until after the 75th minute. The team had
plenty of opportunities to score in the first half, but we
just couldn't put the ball in the goal, head coach Fleur
Benatar said. Collette Parker and Luci Romberg played
outstanding. Our defense played well and kept Schreiner from
having many looks at goal. The girls picked up their play in
the final few minutes, making for an exciting finish.
It took the Pioneers 31 minutes from the start of the game
before they found their first score, an unassisted goal from
Romberg. TWU recorded 19 shots during the first period with
Schreiner goalkeeper Kristin Hall making eight saves. In the
second period, Romberg again found the goal first when she
scored for a second time in the 67th minute. A little over
three minutes later, Melissa Scott (Denton, Tex./Denton
H.S.) added goal, her first of the season, and giving the
Pioneers a 3-0 lead. Melissa Williams (Arlington, Tex./Lamar
H.S.) recorded her first goal of the season when she scored
at the 76:56 mark, giving TWU their 4-0 victory.
Stephanie Stein (Trophy Club, Tex./Northwest H.S.) and Sara
Weaver (Prosper, Tex./Prosper H.S.) again split time
at goal with Stein recording four saves in the first period
and Weaver claiming one save in the second stanza. Brittany
Whorton (Flower Mound, Tex./Middle Tennessee St.) turned
in seven shots on the night with four shots on goal while Lacey
Steinkamp (Fort Bend, Tex./Clements H.S.) had three shots
and two shots on goal. TWU finished the game with 29 shots,
17 shots on goal and four scores. They had 10 corner kicks
and were called for 12 fouls.
Next up, the Pioneers travel across town to play the University
of North Texas on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m. TWU will host
their first home game on Friday, Sept. 13 vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor
at 5:00 p.m.
