TEXAS WOMAN'S DROPS OPENER
AT NCAA SOFTBALL REGIONALS
Pioneers' Back-to-Back Homers Not Enough
SAN
ANTONIO, Tex. - Despite
back-to-back home runs in the first inning from senior Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX) and junior Stefani
Easter (Troy,
TX), the Texas Woman's University softball team lost
a 5-3 decision to Tarleton State in the first round of the
NCAA South Central Regional.
The pair of solo homers
tied the ball game at 2-all after TSU scored two quick in
the top of the first off a two-run homer from Monica Garza.
Neither team could get on the board again until the top of
the sixth, when Garza hit a two-run double. Garza also scored
on the play when she advanced to third on the throw then
went home on an error by the catcher.
Easter answered for the
Pioneers in the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right
field. Sophomore Sarah White (Lewisville, TX) drove
her home with a single as she went 2-for-3 on the day.
"We just had an inability
to move runners today," TWU head coach Dianne Baker said. "We
had people in scoring position, but couldn't score. They
scored on both of our errors and Monica Garza certainly hurt
us with her offense and they (TSU) got the timely hits. In
a game that comes down to little things, we didn't get it
done."
Freshman Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) struck out four TexAnns, but was the
pitcher of record and fell to 18-10 after the complete
game.
The
Pioneers (40-14) will face the loser of Thursday's game between No. 1 seed St.
Mary's (45-10) and No. 4 Colorado-Colorado Springs at 1:30
p.m. on Friday.
