ANGELO
STATE DEFEATS TWU TO WIN LONE STAR CROWN
Four Pioneers Named to Conference All-Tournament Team
IRVING,
Tex. -- Angelo State defeated Texas
Woman's University, 6-1, to win the 2004 Lone Star Conference
Tournament title Saturday at Irving's Southwest Park.
TWU, the No. 2 seed in LSC South Division,
got on the board early when Jennifer Collins (Forney,
TX) drove in Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi,
TX) in the top of the first inning. However, the
top-seeded Rambelles scored a quick two in the bottom of
the inning followed by four more unanswered runs.
Collins and Flores were both named to the 2004
All-Tournament Team, along with senior outfielder Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX) and freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX).
Russ-Keller was credited with the win in the
7-4 TWU victory over Southeastern Oklahoma in the first game
of the day. After a three-hour rain delay, the two teams
squared off at approximately 2:05 p.m. Saturday in the semifinal.
Both went back and forth until Flores broke open the game
for the Pioneers with a three-run double in the top of the
sixth inning. Junior catcher Stefani
Easter (Troy,
TX) hit her team-best 11th home run with a solo
shot into cen terfield to cap off the 7-4 victory and advance
the Pioneers to the title game.
"I think we have had an outstanding season," TWU
head coach Dianne Baker said. "These
kids have done what they needed to do and we still hope to
make it to (NCAA) Regionals. We know that if we want to make
it to the National Tournament we are going to have to beat
this team (Angelo State)."
Since Angelo State (40-10) earned the Lone
Star Conference's automatic berth to the NCAA South Central
Regionals, the Pioneers (40-13) will have to wait until Monday
to see if they earn an at-large bid. Complete pairings and
location will be announced the afternoon of May 3.
