TWU SOFTBALL MOVES INTO FINAL DAY OF LSC TOURNAMENT
Pioneers Knock Off North #1 Seed Midwestern State
with Flores’ Homer

IRVING, Tex. – Texas Woman’s University senior shortstop Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Pioneers a 6-5 victory against Midwestern State.

The win over the North Division top seed in Friday’s Lone Star Conference Tournament action kept No. 2 South TWU in the winner’s bracket. The Pioneers dropped a 5-2 decision to South No. 1 Angelo State, but do advance to Saturday’s play in the double-elimination tournament.

Midwestern State did hold a 4-1 edge over TWU entering the top of the fifth inning. However, the Pioneers tied it up on a three-run triple from senior Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX) and then took the lead when Boudreaux scored on a wild pitch. Midwestern State tied it up with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth after TWU senior pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX) held the Lady Indians scoreless for two innings. Freshman Lindsy Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) came in for relief and retired all four batters she faced leaving Flores’ home run unanswered.

The TWU offense did not come alive until the seventh inning of the second game as Angelo State pitcher Claudia Lopez had a perfect game through six. Boudreaux broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field, and was followed by a home run from senior Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX).

“In the fifth inning, I told them my goal was to get a run,” TWU head coach Dianne Baker said. “By the seventh, I just wanted them to break up the no-hitter and my seniors answered that call. We just need to remember that to be a premier team, we need to be able to go toe-to-toe with everyone we play.”

The Pioneers (39-12) will face Southeastern Oklahoma (30-18) at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The winner will face Angelo State (39-10) at approximately 1 p.m.
