ADVANCES PAST NORTHEASTERN STATE
Russ-Keller Tallies 10 Strikeouts
IRVING,
Tex. – The Texas
Woman’s University softball team defeated Northeastern
State, 2-0, in the first round of the 2004 Lone Star Conference
Tournament Thursday night at Irving’s Southwest Park.
Senior outfielder Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX) hit a solo home run in the third inning. Boudreaux’s
homer came after senior Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi,
TX) drove in sophomore Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas,
TX) on a sacrifice fly to left field. In the fifth inning,
Flores extended her hitting streak to 12 games with a single.
Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) was credited with the win for
the Pioneers. Russ-Keller struck out 10 Lady Reds, finishing
just one strike out short of the TWU single-game record
held by Karen Lundstedt (1999) and Angela Burns (2000).
“I thought this was a well-played, well-fought
ballgame by both teams,” TWU head coach Dianne
Baker said. “I thought Lindsy (Russ-Keller) was outstanding
and she and Stef (Easter) really seemed to catch them of
guard. We’re glad we got a couple of runs early because
that is when we needed them.”
The Pioneers (38-11) will face LSC North Division
top seed Midwestern State (31-12) at 11 a.m. on Friday.
