TWU TAKES TWO FROM
TARLETON STATE IN CRUCIAL CONFERENCE SERIES
Pioneers Win 8-5 and 4-2 in a Pair of Three-Hour Contests
STEPHENVILLE,
Tex. – It
may have taken a few extra innings, but the Texas Woman’s
University softball earned two wins from Tarleton State in
day one of a key Lone Star Conference series.
Both
teams are now tied for second in the LSC South Division with
a 10-6 record with Abilene Christian
and Texas A&M-Kingsville hot on their heels. Only the
top three teams in each division advance to the Conference
Tournament next weekend.
“We just played the underdog today,” said
TWU head coach Dianne Baker. “We put
all the pressure on them (Tarleton). We usually expect good
things from the top of our line-up, but today we had a combination
of both. Everyone hit the ball well and really tried the
best they could.”
The Pioneers got the job done in game one with
an 8-5 victory in nine innings. TSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead
after the second inning, but it was short-lived. Senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) hit a three-run homer
and senior Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX) scored
two more runs on a similar home run to left field.
Junior Lauren Gustartis (Bellaire,
TX) tallied the winning run in the top of the
ninth. Gustartis doubled to get on base and scored off
a single from senior Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX).
Boudreaux and Flores then scored on a single from sophomore Amanda
Arnold (The Colony, TX).
After that three-hour battle, the Pioneers
won the second game by a 4-2 decision in eight innings. Sophomore Courtney
Martin (Lake Dallas, TX) tied it up at 2-all in
the fifth when she scored off an error by the TSU shortstop.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Gustartis hit her
second double of the day to score sophomore Rachel
Townsend (Jacksonville, AR) and junior Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX).
Sophomore pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX) was credited with the win in
dramatic fashion to improve to 10-2 on the season. Chambless
struck out the final TexAnn batter with a full count and
the tying runs already on base.
The No. 18 Pioneers conclude their Lone Star
Conference regular season Saturday with another 1 p.m. doubleheader
with Tarleton State.
