TOWNSEND
DRIVES IN TWU’S
WINNING RUN IN EIGHTH INNING
Pioneers Split Extra Inning Games With Abilene Christian
DENTON,
Tex. – Texas
Woman’s sophomore Rachel
Townsend (Jacksonville,
AR) singled to left field, driving in Sarah
White (Lewisville, TX) for the winning run in the
Pioneers’ 5-4 eight-inning victory against Abilene
Christian.
The win salvaged a split in the Lone Star Conference
series as TWU improved to 33-11 overall and 8-6 in the LSC.
TWU
needed Townsend’s heroics after letting
a 4-2 lead with two outs in the seventh slip away. White
started the two-out rally with a single to left and then
stole second base to get into scoring position for Townsend.
The first game went into extra innings as well,
despite a five-run fifth inning by the Pioneers. Senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) hit a three-run homer,
followed by a two-run home run from junior Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) to give TWU a 5-4 edge. The Wildcats
answered with a home run of their own in the sixth to tie
it up and earned the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the
top of the eighth.
“These two teams really battled each
other all weekend,” said TWU head coach Dianne
Baker. “I was proud of my team for showing
their true grit and keep fighting at the end. Rachel (Townsend)
came in to give us a spark again and both her and Sarah (White)
have been working on their hitting and base running. I’m
really glad that showed for them today.”
The No. 11 Pioneers conclude their home regular
season this Tuesday, April 20 as they host Northwood for
a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
