SPLITS LSC DOUBLEHEADER WITH ABILENE CHRISTIAN
Pioneer Offense Rallies in Game Two
DENTON,
Tex. – The No.
11 Texas Woman’s University softball team split its
Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Abilene Christian
Friday, rallying from a 6-0 loss in game one to earn an 8-5
victory in the second game.
Junior infielder Megan
Helms (Krum,
TX) was the only Pioneer to really get her offense
going at the start with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Seniors Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) and Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX) each contributed a double,
but only with the bases empty. Both teams were scoreless
through four innings until ACU junior Valerie Malkinson
drilled a grand slam over the left field fence in the top
of the fifth.
In the second game, Malkinson put the Wildcats
on the board first but ACU would not be able to hold onto
the lead. Flores and sophomore Rachel
Townsend (Jacksonville,
AR), who substituted for Collins when she rolled
an ankle just minutes before the game’s first pitch,
each singled to get on base. Junior Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) nailed a two-run double, then scored
the winning run to put TWU up 3-2. Townsend added another
RBI-single in the second inning and made some big defensive
plays at third base for the Pioneers as well.
“I think we may have to change our strategies
for tomorrow,” said TWU head coach Dianne Baker. “They
(ACU) are a good-hitting ball club and we may need to be
more aggressive. We struggled in the first ball game, but
Rachel Townsend did a really wonderful job in the second
game. I think she sparked our team and gave them some energy
to step up and start hitting.”
Senior Dawn England (Graham, TX) was
credited with the win in game two to improve her record to
11-2. Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson,
TX) earned the Pioneers’ first save of the
season as she faced the winning run with bases loaded in
the top of the fifth.
The Pioneers (32-10, 7-5 LSC) will conclude
their conference series with Abilene Christian Saturday with
a 1 p.m. doubleheader. In addition to Senior Day festivities
prior to the games, the 1979 AIAW College World Series National
Championship softball team will also be honored during a
special Silver Anniversary ceremony between the two games.
