PIONEERS WIN TWO IN CONFERENCE SERIES WITH
EASTERN NEW MEXICO

Easter Adds Two More Homers to Season Total

PORTALES, N.M. – The 16th-ranked Texas Woman’s University softball team defeated Eastern New Mexico, 6-3 and 4-2, in a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader Friday.

The first game went 10 innings and was decided on an international tie-breaker after both teams remained tied at 3-all after nine. Senior leadoff batter Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) started the tenth on second base. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX) and scored off a double from senior Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX). Junior Stefani Easter (Troy, TX) was the next to bat and drove Collins home with a double. Easter stole third and scored the Pioneers’ sixth run when the catcher overthrew the base.

TWU was down 3-1 in the top of the sixth, but Easter tied it up off a solo home run. She added another two-run homer in the second game for a team-best six on the season.

“The first game was pretty sloppy,” TWU head coach Dianne Baker said. “We had four errors, but we got through it. We played much better in the second game and really took advantage of our hitting.”

Easter and Collins both went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game and scored the winning runs to put TWU up 2-0 in the middle of the first inning. Sophomore hurler Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX) pitched the complete game and improved to 8-1 on the season.

“The pitchers really buckled down when they had a scoring threat and our batters got some timely hits at crucial times,” Baker added. “Eastern is certainly going to come out harder tomorrow and we are going to have to as well.”

The Pioneers (26-5, 4-2 LSC) will conclude their conference series at Eastern New Mexico with another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CST).
