PIONEER
SOFTBALL SWEEPS NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE
Flores Two-Run Triple Beats Bearcats in Game One
DENTON,
Tex. – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team defeated Northwest Missouri State, 2-1 and
6-0, in Wednesday’s nonconference doubleheader at
Pioneer Field.
In
the first game, the Bearcats got on the board first off a
single from rightfielder Kaytee Schulenberg in the fifth
inning. TWU started to load the bases with singles from sophomore Rachel
Townsend (Jacksonville, AR) and junior Lauren
Gustartis (Bellaire, TX) in the bottom of the inning.
Senior Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) drove
them both home with her triple deep into right centerfield
for the 2-1 victory. Senior pitcher Dawn England
(Graham, TX) improved her record to an unblemished
7-0.
The
Pioneers held their opponents scoreless in the second game
to earn sophomore pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville,
TX) her first shutout of the season. Flores led
the TWU offense again with two hits, along with Lone Star
Conference Hitter of the Week Stefani
Easter (Troy,
TX). Easter went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
“I
thought this was a good team to face as we go into our conference
weekend at Eastern New Mexico,” TWU head coach Dianne
Baker said. “We talked before the game about
playing at a higher standard, be it conference or non-conference
play. I think we did up our game and I think we will try
to play at a higher standard the rest of the season.”
The
Pioneers (24-5) will travel to Eastern New Mexico this weekend
to resume Lone Star Conference play. TWU will play 1 p.m.
doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
