TWU SOFTBALL WINS TWO IN CONFERENCE OPENER
Four Pioneer Seniors Lead Charge Against Javelinas

DENTON, Tex. – The Texas Woman’s University softball team got off to a good start Friday night in its Lone Star Conference opener, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-4 and 7-2.

In the first game, Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning. TWU senior Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX) answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Javelinas replied with two more hits to score another run in the second inning.

Collins drove in two more runs off a single to left field. Seniors Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) and Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX) scored the tying runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game went into extra innings when Boudreaux singled to right and the outfielder nailed Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX) on a long throw to third base. Martin came back with a single to left field and then scored the winning run off a single from Flores in the bottom of the ninth.

The Pioneers turned their offense up a notch in the second game, scoring at least one run in the first five innings. Boudreaux hit a triple down the right field wall and scored off a passed ball for the winning run in the 7-2 victory. Collins added another RBI to give her five on the evening, as did Flores, sophomore Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX) and junior Stefani Easter (Troy, TX), who led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer over the center field fence.

Senior pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX) was credited with the win to improve her record to an unblemished 6-0 on the season.

“I thought we were a little nervous in the first game,” said Pioneer head coach Dianne Baker. “However, we regained our composure and got lots of hits in the second game. Stefani Easter, Jennifer Collins, Nikki Boudreaux and Teresa Flores were big for us offensively. They had fight and determination and got things done.”

The two teams play another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
