SOFTBALL OFF TO SCHOOL RECORD START AT 20-3
Flores Leads TWU Offense in Both Victories
DENTON,
Tex. – The Texas
Woman’s University softball team improved its season
record to 20-3 – its best start since the program
was reinstated in 1997 – with two wins on Wednesday
afternoon.
In
the first game, TWU and Northwestern Oklahoma State were
scoreless through four and a half innings. Senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) drove in the winning
run with her triple to left field. Flores sent a two-run
homer over the left center fence in the bottom of the sixth
and the final score was 5-1.
Freshman
pitcher Lindsy Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) improved
to 9-2 with the win. Senior outfielder Nikki Boudreaux
(Orange, TX) swiped two more of her team-high 29
stolen bases against the Rangers.
The
Pioneers defeated Benedictine College, 11-1, in the second
game. Flores was hot at the plate with a 2-of-3 performance
and four more RBIs. Sophomore Amanda
Arnold (The
Colony, TX) was also 2-of-3 with a double, triple
and three RBIs. Freshman Ashley
Hartley (Pasadena,
TX) earned her first collegiate hit and drove in
teammate Sarah White (Lewisville, TX) for
the winning run.
Sophomore
pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX) earned
the win, but shared time on the mound with senior Dawn
England (Graham, TX) and sophomore Crystal
Hankel (Calgary, ALB).
“We
are playing very well,” said Pioneer assistant coach Marty
Blowers. “We are playing like a team.”
The
Pioneers open their Lone Star Conference season this weekend,
hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville to a 5 p.m. doubleheader
on Friday and 1 p.m. double bill on Saturday.
