PIONEERS
SWEEP TEXAS WESLEYAN IN DOUBLEHEADER
Collins’ Grand Slam Caps First Game
DENTON,
Tex. – Senior infielder Jennifer Collins (Forney,
TX) drilled a grand slam in the sixth inning to
give the Pioneers an 11-1 win against Texas Wesleyan in game
one of a doubleheader Tuesday.
Senior
pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX) retired
seven batters to improve her record to 4-0. Outfielder Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX) went 3-for-4 at the plate
and stole four bases to average one per game this season.
“We
performed well in the first game,” said Pioneer assistant
coach Marty
Blowers. “We ran the bases well and we were
aggressive. Our short game is coming along and getting better.
We were clearly in control of the first game, but we were
caught on our heels by their pitcher in the second”
The
Pioneers fell behind 3-2 in the second game. Junior catcher Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) hit a two-run single in the bottom
of the fifth to regain the lead. In the sixth, freshman Amanda
Emory (Sherman, TX) made her second career hit really
count as she nailed a triple to left field. Senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) followed Emory’s
triple with a two-run homer over the right center fence.
Flores,
the Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, went 6-for-7
for the night with four RBI and two stolen bases. She is
hitting .556 for the season.
Freshman
pitcher Lindsy Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) struck
out nine Lady Rams, but uncharacteristically gave up five
hits.
The
Pioneers (16-3) are on the road this weekend at the Alamo
Invitational in San Antonio. They return to Pioneer field
for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Benedictine on Wednesday,
March 17.
