PIONEERS
LOSE TIGHT GAME TO EMPORIA STATE IN GOLD SEMIFINAL
Flores Adds Two More Hits To Season-Best Total
IRVING,
Tex. – The Pioneers missed several scoring
opportunities and gave up an unearned run to Emporia State
for a 1-0 loss in the gold semifinal of the NFCA/Schutt
Sports Leadoff Classic on Sunday at Southwest Park in Irving.
In
the first inning, Texas Woman’s reliable senior shortstop Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) led off the Pioneer
offense with a single to left field. She advanced to third,
where she was picked off to end the inning.
In
the second, the Pioneers had bases loaded with no outs thanks
to a trio of Hornet errors. ESU pitcher Melissa Stevens quickly
recorded two of her nine strikeouts in the game and the inning
ended on a pop-up to third base.
“The
pitching was solid on both sides,” said TWU head coach Dianne
Baker. Their pitcher kept pitching out of the strike
zone and we kept reaching for it. The more we reached, the
more she pitched it there.”
ESU
outfielder Lindsey Abbott led off the fourth inning with
a triple to the right center gap. The next batter flied out
to right and Abbott scored on the right fielder’s overthrow
to the catcher.
TWU
had another chance in the sixth inning, with Flores again
singling to left and advancing to third. However, this time
both Flores and teammate Jennifer Collins (Forney,
TX) were left stranded at the end of the inning.
Sophomore
pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX) struck
out five, but was credited with her first loss of the season
to drop her record to 4-1.
“Amanda
pitched a very good game. They shouldn’t have scored
and we had so many chances (to score). I am proud of what
this team accomplished. My only disappointment is that we
left so many base runners. We should have been playing in
the final.”
The
Pioneers return home to host Texas Wesleyan for a 5 p.m.
doubleheader Tuesday, March 9 at Pioneer Field.
