TEXAS
WOMAN'S SOFTBALL ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL SEMIFINAL
Pioneers
Win Pool at NFCA Leadoff Classic
IRVING,
Tex. -- The Texas Woman's University softball
team swept its pool at the NFCA/Schutt Sports Leadoff Classic
with a 4-3 victory over Midwestern State. The Pioneers
then improved to 14-2 on the season and advanced to the
semifinal game of bracket play with a 4-3 win against Incarnate
Word.
In
the first game, the score was knotted at 3-all in the bottom
of the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX) drove in the winning run for
the 4-3 victory. Junior Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) continues
on her hot streak as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a
RBI. Freshman pitcher Lindsy Russ-Keller (Dicki
nson, TX) came in to the game at the top of the
sixth and was credited with the win.
"I'm
really proud of the way this team came back after a few adverse
innings," said TWU head coach Dianne Baker. "We
played together as a team because it took all of us for this
big win."
Russ-Keller
struck out seven Incarnate Word batters in the afternoon
to improve her record to 7-2 this season. Offensively, the
Pioneers were led by senior shortstop Teresa Flores
(Corpus Christi, TX) who hit two doubles and Collins
nailed another key two-run single. Senior outfielder Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX) put on an impressive display in base running,
stealing a total of four in the game.
Baker
added, "The kids played well throughout this ballgame.
Even when they lost their focus, they got it back quickly.
They are having a good time and have really learned to adjust
to game situations."
The
Pioneers play Emporia State at 12:30 p.m. at Southwest Park
in Irving. A win will advance them to the Gold Championship
game at 2:45 p.m.
