PIONEERS
WIN TWO IN FIRST DAY OF NFCA LEADOFF CLASSIC
Flores & Easter Have Hot Bats
IRVING,
Tex. – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team got off to a good start in the first day
of the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic,
which was played Friday at Southwest Park in Irving. The
Pioneers defeated Wayne State (Mich.), 5-1, in the morning
and beat St. Edward’s, 5-1, in the afternoon to improve
to 12-2 on the season.
In
the morning, TWU got on the board first when junior catcher Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) led off the fourth inning with
a triple to left field. Easter scored off an error following
Pioneer Amanda Emory’s (Sherman, TX) successful
stolen base attempt. Easter put up three more runs in the
fifth when she doubled with bases loaded.
The
Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game and
pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX) was
heading toward a shutout at the top of the seventh. TWU senior
shortstop Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) scored
two runs and drove in another off her 2-for-2 performance
at the plate. Easter nailed a double in the fourth to score,
then hit a two-run single in the fifth.
“Teresa
Flores and Stefani Easter are both hitting the ball well
for us,” said TWU head softball coach Dianne
Baker. “Our defense was on track, making plays
when we needed them and staying calm and controlled. Overall,
our pitching was solid and we were getting timely hits. We
are playing well. I hope we wake up and do it again tomorrow.”
The
Pioneers will play Midwestern State at 9 a.m. Saturday. That
will be TWU’s final game of pool play in the Leadoff
Classic. The pairings for bracket play will be announced
later in the afternoon.
