SWEEP OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE IN HOME OPENER
TWU Improves to 10-2 on the Season
DENTON,
Tex. – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team improved to 10-2 this season, taking two
from visiting Oklahoma Panhandle State, 2-0 and 2-1, in
the Pioneers home opener Thursday evening.
In
the first game, TWU scored both runs off a single in the
fourth from junior catcher Stefani
Easter (Troy,
TX). Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) struck out eight Lady Aggies and
earned her third shutout of the season.
The
second game came down to the wire, as the teams entered the
bottom of the seventh tied at 1-1. After pinch runner Courtney
Martin (Lake Dallas, TX) stole second, junior Lauren
Gustartis (Bellaire, TX) drove her home with a big
double to left field. Senior pitcher Dawn England
(Graham, TX) came in at the top of the sixth and
improved to 3-0 after getting credit for the win.
“We
actually came out flat tonight,” said TWU head softball
coach Dianne Baker. “Our pitchers
did a great job, but most of them just came out flat and
we didn’t seem like the same team. To their credit,
they do like to win and they did what it took to do just
that.”
The
Pioneers will take a week off before hosting Cameron for
a make-up game on Thursday, March 4 at 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer
Field.
