PIONEERS
TAKE TWO IN FINAL DAY OF TOURNAMENT
TWU Shuts Out North Alabama, 3-0, and Mars Hill, 7-0
KENNESAW,
Ga. – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team shut out both of its opponents Saturday morning
to finish as runner-up in the Kennesaw State Tournament
and improve to 8-2 on the season.
TWU
and North Alabama squared off at 8 a.m. in the first game
of the day. Both teams played seven innings of scoreless
softball to force an international tie-breaker. The Pioneers
scored three runs in the top of the eighth and held on to
get the 3-0 victory. Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) was credited with her third win
of the season and second shutout.
“This
was a big win for us,” said TWU head softball coach Dianne
Baker. “This was a battle on both sides with
nobody hitting and the defense holding up on both sides.
We kept trying to get a hit off their pitcher so we started
slap hitting in the eighth. It worked to our advantage.”
In
the second game, the Pioneers came out with a pair of hits
from seniors Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) and Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX) and scored a total of four
runs in the first inning. Flores also hit a solo home run
to lead off the second inning. Senior pitcher Dawn
England (Graham, TX) earned the win with five strikeouts
on the afternoon.
“The
Mars Hill game was a very good defensive game for us and
a very good pitching game by Dawn England,” Baker added. “We
are getting back on track and look forward to getting home
to play Wednesday to keep our momentum going.”
The
Pioneers will play their home opener on Wednesday, February
25 against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 4 p.m. at Pioneer
Field.
