SOFTBALL OPENS HOME CAMPAIGN THIS THURSDAY
Pioneers Off to a 5-1 Start
DENTON,
Tex. – The
Texas Woman’s University softball team welcomes Cameron
University to Pioneer Field for its home opener this Thursday,
February 12 at 5 p.m.
TWU
improved to 5-1 on the season, taking two-of-three games
played Saturday during the final day of play at the Las Vegas
Classic. The Pioneers earned a 6-4 victory against Colorado
School of Mines and a 4-2 win against Colorado-Colorado Springs,
after dropping a 3-1 decision to New Mexico Highlands in
the first game of the afternoon.
Senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) went 6 of 9 from the
plate in the three games. Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) improved to 2-1 on
the season after earning the win after five and a third
innings against Colorado-Colorado Springs. The Pioneers
had a 1-0 lead against New Mexico Highlands until giving
up a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
“The
elements were tough on us Saturday as we played three games
in the wind and cold,” said TWU head softball coach Dianne
Baker. “I was proud of my team for staying
mentally and physically tough after a hard loss against New
Mexico Highlands. We had one costly mistake, but we hung
in there.”
The
Pioneers will have a busy weekend, playing four games as
part of the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Softball Jamboree
at Southwest Park in Irving, Texas. TWU will face LSC North
Division foes, Central Oklahoma and East Central on Friday
and Northeastern State and Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday.
Games on both days will be played at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
