PIONEERS
CONTINUE ON VEGAS WINNING STREAK
TWU Earns a Pair of Victories in Tournament
LAS
VEGAS, Nev. – The
Texas Woman's University softball team improved to 3-0
on the season with a 14-6 win against Nebraska-Kearney
and 10-2 victory against Adams State in the Las Vegas Classic.
In
the first game with nationally-ranked Kearney, senior Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) went 3 for 5 with two
doubles and drove in three Pioneer runs. Junior catcher Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX) drilled two home runs and junior Lauren
Gustartis (Bellaire, TX) drove in a run on a 2-for-3
performance. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville,
TX) was credited with the win.
"Amanda
wasn't in command early," said TWU head coach Dianne
Baker. "Then all the kids seemed to calm down
and, in turn, she threw better and earned a big win for our
program."
The
Pioneers disposed of Adams State in five innings, behind
the pitching of senior Dawn England (Graham, TX). England
struck out four for her first win of the season. Speaking
of firsts, sophomore Rachel
Townsend (Jacksonville,
AR) hit her first collegiate home run and drove
in three runs on the afternoon. Senior Nikki Boudreaux
(Orange, TX) tallied two RBIs on a 2-fo r-3 outing.
Baker
added, "We continue to hit the ball well. Even when
we had some defensive breakdowns, we made up for it offensively."
The
Pioneers play three more games tomorrow to close out the
Las Vegas Classic. They return to Pioneer Field for their
home opener with Cameron on Thursday, February 12 at 5 p.m.
