SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH WIN OVER FORT LEWIS
Freshman Russ-Keller Pitches Complete Game One-Hitter
LAS
VEGAS, Nev. – The
Texas Woman’s
University softball team opened its 2004 campaign this afternoon,
blanking Fort Lewis, 7-0, in the first game of the Las Vegas
Classic.
Freshman pitcher Lindsy
Russ-Keller (Dickinson, TX) allowed
only one hit in her collegiate debut and struck out eight Skyhawk
batters.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by senior Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX), who went 2-4 on the afternoon.
Junior catcher Stefani Easter (Troy, TX) was
also 2-4 at the plate and drove in two runs with doubles
in the third and seventh innings.
“Our kids were very focused,” said
TWU head coach Dianne
Baker. “Everybody was on top of their game
and making good decisions. We wanted our first game out to
be something we could feel good about and that is what we
got.”
The Pioneers play two games tomorrow, one apiece against nationally-ranked
Nebraska-Kearney and Adams State. The Las Vegas Classic concludes
on Saturday, February 7, with the Pioneers scheduled to play
three more games then. TWU hosts Cameron on Thursday, February
12 at 5 p.m. for the home opener at Pioneer Field.
