SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA ENDS PIONEERS TOURNEY RUN IN SOFTBALL

IRVING, TX—Texas Woman's University (36-23-1) had a 4-2 lead through four innings of play, but Southeastern Oklahoma (42-12) scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to take the advantage and held on for a 5-6 victory. Pioneer catcher Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) hit her league-leading 14th homerun of the season to tie the game a 5-apiece in the top of sixth inning.

TWU jumped to an early lead in their elimination game with Southeastern Oklahoma as Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) scored on a passed ball by the Lady Savages catcher. One out later, Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/ Miller H.S.) stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the SOSU catcher, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After the Lady Savages added a run in the bottom of the second, TWU added two more scores to push to a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Flores batted in Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) from second base with a RBI-single up the middle of the infield, then Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) knocked in Flores with a RBI-single to center field in the next at-bat. Kristin McNeece drew SOSU one run closer in the bottom of the fourth when she hit a solo-homerun over the left field fence.

Southeastern's pitcher, Christina Cearley, held TWU scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, then her teammates scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the game. Brandy Polinard batted in the first run when she connected with a RBI-single to left center field with two runners on base. The Pioneers' replaced starting pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) with Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) to get the final two outs of the inning. Chambless hit the first batter she faced with a pitch to load the bases, then walked the next two batters, giving the Lady Savages a 4-5 lead. Jami Ingram led off the top of the sixth inning with her homerun, tying the game at 5-5. Devin Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley H.S.) came in to relieve Chambless in the bottom of the sixth and kept SOSU off of the board. After TWU went three up, three down in the top of the seventh, the Lady Savages recorded three straight singles in the bottom half of the inning, the last one being the game winning RBI from Christina Armstrong, to win the game 5-6. Blew recorded the loss after allowing the game winning run on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Up next, the Pioneers await word if they are one of the six teams that will be competing in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Softball Tournament, held on May 8-10, 2003 at location to be determined. TWU was ranked No. 7 in the final regional poll. The NCAA will announce the competitors on Monday, May 5.
