#21 TARLETON STATE
SWEEPS PIONEERS IN SOFTBALL
DENTON,
TXTexas
Woman's University (34-21-1, 10-10 LSC) recorded a total
of 12 hits in their doubleheader
with Tarleton State (37-16, 16-4 LSC), but left
10 runners stranded as they dropped their final two regular
season games of 2003, 2-4 and 1-4. Jami Ingram (Richmond,
B.C./Blinn College) finished out career at Pioneer Field
by going a combined 2 for 6 from the plate with two RBI and
her 12th homerun of the season.
I take my hat off to Tarleton State this weekend, they
played some great softball. It has been a while since we have
played two errorless games, but Tarleton State capitalized
on some of our mental errors and won both games this afternoon, head
coach Dianne Baker said. Tarleton made all of the plays
they had to and answered everything we gave them in all four
games. I don't think we played badly this weekend, we just
didn't play well enough to beat a team that was on a mission
to win the conference title.
After
both teams left runners stranded in the first inning, Tarleton
State to a 0-1 lead in game one in the top of the
second when Neva Parrott doubled to center field, scoring Cheryl
Dickens. The TexAnns scored two more runs, one in the third
and one in the fourth, off of RBI-singles to take a 0-3 lead
through five full innings. The Pioneers had a chance to score
in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs,
but TSU starting pitcher Carla Geeslin struck out Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller HS) to end the inning.
Ingram finally put TWU on the board in the bottom of the
sixth with her 12th season homer,
a solo shot over the left field fence. Monica Garza gave Tarleton
State a little breathing room in the top of the seventh when
she hit a homerun of her own, making the score 1-4. Flores
hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh with two runners
on to bring TWU within two, 2-4, but relief pitcher Amy Bristow
got the final two outs to end the game. Geeslin earned the
win and moved her record to 18-8 on the year after allowing
two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. TWU starting
pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham HS) moved
her record to 15-5 with the loss. She allowed four runs on
nine hits and struck out three batters.
Jami
Lovejoy gave Tarleton State an early 0-1 lead in game two
when she doubled in Monica Garza from second base in the
top of the first inning. After going three up, three down in
the first three innings, Jami Ingram tied the game in the bottom
of the fourth when she hit a single that the Tarleton State
center fielder misplayed, allowing Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX/Navarro College) to score from second base. The TexAnns
went scoreless for four innings, then scored two runs in the
top of the sixth, one from a sacrifice fly and the other off
a RBI-single, to take a 1-3 lead. They added an insurance run
in the seventh and starting pitcher Amy Bristow allowed only
two hits in the final three innings to record the 1-4 victory.
Pioneers' starting pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville,
TX/Collinsville HS) moved her record to 15-9 with the
loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 30 batters faced.
Up next, the Pioneers prepare to face the No. 2 team from
the North Division in the Lone Star Conference Softball Tournament
on Friday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m. at Southwest Park in Irving,
Texas. Despite their four losses this weekend, TWU wrapped
up third place in the LSC South Division by virtue of Abilene
Christian's two losses on Friday night to Angelo State.
