PIONEERS COME UP SHORT AGAINST #23 TARLETON STATE

DENTON, TX—Tarleton State (35-16, 14-4 LSC) pitcher Carla Geeslin allowed only three hits in a 2-0 shutout victory in game one of a doubleheader against Texas Woman's University (34-19-1, 10-8 LSC). Geeslin was then brought in to close out a rally by the Pioneers in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to help the TexAnns to a 9-7 win.

Tarleton State got on the board first in game one when Monica Garza hit a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Neva Parrott and Staci Greear. TWU starting pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham HS) retired the final three batters to end the first inning and allowed only three more hits the rest of the game. The Pioneers could not find a handle on Carla Geeslin's pitching, recording only three hits the entire game. TWU threatened to score in the bottom of the third inning with Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) sitting on third base with two outs, but Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) hit into a ground out for the final out of the inning. Geeslin moved her record to 17-8 on the season with the 2-0 victory while England recorded her fourth loss of the season.

TWU took an early lead in game two when Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The Colony HS) hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. The TexAnns quickly answered back with three runs in the top of the third to take a 2-3 lead. After Tarleton State added another run in the top of the sixth, Megan Helms (Krum, TX/ Krum HS) hit her fourth double of the season, scoring Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/ Grayson C.C.) from first and closing the gap to 3-4. Tarleton State blew the game open in the top of the seventh when they scored five runs on three hits. The Pioneers were not done as they began to rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Sascha Taylor grounded out to the shortstop with two runners on base, allowing Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas HS) to score from third. Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller HS) hit a RBI-single through the middle of the infield to score Arnold. In the next at-bat, Nikki Boudreaux recorded her fifth triple of the season, allowing Flores to score from first base. After the TexAnns made a pitching change to bring in Carla Geeslin, Collins drove in Boudreaux with a RBI-single through the infield. Sarah White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville HS) stepped up to the plate with the tying run on first base and struck out swinging to end the game, 7-9. Amy Bristow recorded the win after she allowed seven runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters. TWU starting pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/ Collinsville HS) recorded the loss after she allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Up next, the Pioneers finish out the 2003 regular season with two more games against Tarleton State on Saturday, April 26. The double header will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a special ceremony for TWU's two seniors, Jami Ingram and Sascha Taylor, preceding the game.
