PIONEERS
EIGHT-RUN RULE
RAMS TO SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER IN SOFTBALL
DENTON,
TXTexas
Woman's University (34-17-1) scored eight runs on nine hits
and starting pitcher Dawn
England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) recorded her seventh
complete-game shutout as the Pioneers walked away with a 8-0
victory over Texas Wesleyan (15-24) in game one
of their double header. Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller
H.S.) connected with a game-winning, three-run double in
the bottom of the sixth inning to help lead TWU to an 11-1
win in game two and the series sweep. TWU also swept the Rams
in a doubleheader on March 11, 9-0 and 3-1.
After
Texas Wesleyan went three-up, three-down to begin game one,
the Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX/ Grayson C.C.) put TWU's first run
on the board when she doubled to left center field, scoring Courtney
Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) from third
base. Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) batted
in Collins in the next at-bat with a single to left field.
The score was 3-0 in favor of the Pioneers in the bottom of
the fifth when TWU took control of the game with four runs.
Freshman rightfielder Sarah White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville
H.S.) scored the first run when she crossed home plate
off a RBI-single by Martin. Flores connected with a
sacrifice fly later in the inning, scoring Martin and making
the score 5-0. After Collins got on base with her third triple
of the season, Ingram blasted a two-run homerun, her 13th of
the season, over the left center field fence to end the scoring. Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) ended the game
after six innings when she hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Megan
Helms (Krum, TX/Krum H.S.) and giving TWU the 8-0 victory.
England improved her season record to 15-3 by allowing just
three
hits in six innings of work.
With
her three RBIs, Ingram became the Pioneers new record holder
for RBIs in a season (51) and for a career (87), eclipsing
the old marks set by Nickie Engelbrecht from 1999-2001. Engelbrecht
recorded 50 RBI in 1999. Ingram finished the game going 3 of
3 from the plate and was a triple away from hitting for the
cycle.
Both
schools were scoreless after the first inning of play, but Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston State) delivered
a three-run homerun with one out in the bottom of the second
to give TWU a 3-0 lead in game two. After the Rams scored a
run in the top of the third, the Pioneers blew the game open
with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
With the bases loaded, White reached base on a throwing
error by the Texas Wesleyan second baseman, allowing two runs
to cross the plate. In the next at-bat, Easter continued her
hitting ways as she delivered a two-run double down the left
field line. Courtney Martin then scored Easter from third with
a bunt single, making the score 8-1. Teresa Flores grounded
out to the pitcher to end the inning. Needing only one run
to eight-run rule Texas Wesleyan for the second time, Flores
connected with her three-run double in the bottom of the sixth
to end the game 11-1. TWU starting pitcher Amanda Chambless
(Collinsville, TX/Collinsville HS) moved her record
to 15-7 with the win as she allowed only one earned run on
two hits while striking out five batters.
With
her five RBIs in game two, Easter tied a school record for
most RBIs in one game, set by Cathy Jacobson and
Kelly Cox in 1997 and Leslie Roddy in 1999.
Up
next, the Pioneers enjoy a weekend off before they host conference
rival Tarleton State University on Friday and Saturday,
April 25-26 in their final four-game home series of the 2003
season. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 5:00 p.m. with
Saturday's to start at 1:00 p.m.
