PIONEERS
SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH ACU, WIN SERIES 3-1
ABILENE,
TXTexas
Woman's University (32-17-1, 10-6 LSC) and Abilene Christian
(24-25, 7-9 LSC)
were knotted at two apiece when the Wildcats' Shauna Bragg
hit a solo-shot homerun in the bottom of the fifth to help
lead ACU to a 4-2 victory in game one of their double header.
The Pioneers scored three runs early and fended off a Wildcat
rally in the seventh inning to win game two by the score of
3-2. TWU has won three of their four conference series in 2003
with Tarleton State left to play at home on Friday
and Saturday, April 25-26.
Game one was a battle, but Abilene Christian made all
of the plays they needed to win the game. Our team executed
very well, we just got out-played, head coach Dianne
Baker said. The girls rebounded well from game one and
pulled off a tough victory in the second game. We are coming
off the road pretty happy by taking three of four from ACU
and look forward to closing out the regular season with three
straight home double headers.
Abilene
Christian wasted no time in taking a 0-2 lead in game one
of their double header with TWU as Robin Woodall hit a
two-run homerun with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
After going scoreless through the first three innings, the
Pioneers knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) led off the inning
with a double and Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) got
on base with a walk. Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The
Colony H.S.) stepped up to the plate in the third at-bat
and hit a two-RBI single, scoring Collins and Ingram. ACU's
Shauna Bragg broke the tie with her homerun in the bottom of
the fifth inning. The Wildcats added another run in the sixth
and starting pitcher Christina Yorkey retired the final three
TWU batters to earn the 2-4 victory. Pioneers' pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/ Collinsville H.S.) recorded
the loss after she allowed three runs on six hits in five innings
of work.
In
game two, the Pioneers took the upper hand as Collins batted
in Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro
College) with a double in the top of the first, giving
TWU a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers added to their lead in the top
of the third when Boudreaux crossed the plate for a second
time on an error by the ACU pitcher. Later that same inning, Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) used a sacrifice
fly to score Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas
H.S.) from third base, making the score 3-0. Dawn England
(Graham, TX/Graham HS) kept the Wildcats scoreless
through six innings, allowing just five hits. ACU tried to
rally, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the
seventh, but Ashley Whittenberg flied out to right field, ending
the game with the score 3-2. England moved her record to 14-3
on the season with victory as she allowed two runs on eight
hits while striking out two in 32 batters faced.
Up
next, the Pioneers return home to host Texas Wesleyan in
a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16 beginning at 4:30
p.m. TWU swept the Rams in their first meeting this season,
winning both games, 9-0 and 3-1, on March
11, 2003.
