PIONEERS DOWN ABILENE
CHRISTIAN IN SOFTBALL
ABILENE,
TXTexas
Woman's University (31-16-1, 9-5 LSC) needed two wins against
Abilene Christian
(23-24, 6-8 LSC) to distance themselves from the Wildcats
for third place in the Lone Star Conference South Division
and that is what they did in Abilene, Texas Friday night. Jami
Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) broke a 4-4 tie in
the top of the sixth inning when she blasted her 10th homerun
of the season, giving the Pioneers a 5-4 victory in game one.
TWU exploded for 10 runs on 14 hits in game two, winning by
the score of 10-1.
I asked the kids to meet last night as a team and let
them to decide what they wanted to do in the last 10 games
of the season. They decided they wanted to finish the season
strong and it looked like it worked after tonight's games.
Everybody did their job and they played well as a team, head
coach Dianne Baker said. The team hit the ball well during
both games and it was a real boost to have Dawn England pitch
well for us tonight in game two. Dawn and Amanda Chambless
pitched well and the hitters backed them up, which translated
into two victories.
Ingram
began the scoring for TWU in game one when she hit a double
with Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro
College) and Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/ Grayson
C.C.) on first and third, scoring both runners. In the
next at-bat, Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The Colony
H.S.) scored Ingram with a RBI-single, giving the Pioneers
a 3-0 lead. Abilene Christian added put a run on the board
in the second inning, then TWU went ahead 4-1 when Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) scored on a RBI-single
from Collins. The Wildcats' Robin Woodall made the score 4-3
when she delivered a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth
inning. Later that same inning, Shauna Bragg connected with
a RBI-double, tying the game at 4-4. Ingram stepped up to the
plate in the top of the sixth and sent her game winning homerun
over the left field fence. TWU starting pitcher Amanda Chambless
(Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) retired the final
11 ACU batters to record the 5-4 win, moving her record to
14-6 on the season. She allowed four runs, three earned, on
10 hits while striking out one in 32 batter's faced.
Both
teams were scoreless through the first two innings in game
two, but TWU got on the board first in the third inning
with three runs. Teresa Flores hit a RBI-single with two runners
on, scoring Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas
HS) from second base. Collins stepped up and
hit a two RBI-double in the next at-bat, making the score 3-0.
After they scored another run in the fourth inning, the Pioneers
blew the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth.
Collins started the scoring off with a RBI-single. With the
bases loaded two batters later, Arnold sent two runners
home with a single of her own. Sarah White (Lewisville,
TX/ Lewisville H.S.) grounded out to the pitcher, allowing
Arnold to come around for the fourth score of the inning, making
the score 8-0. After ACU added a run in the bottom of the fifth,
the Pioneers scored two more runs to end the game after six
innings, 10-1. Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) moved
her record to 13-3 on the season after she allowed just one
earned run on five hits while striking out one batter.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their conference road series
against Abilene Christian when they meet for the final doubleheader
on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
