PIONEER SOFTBALL SPLITS
WITH ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY
DENTON,
TXAfter
losing game one of their doubleheader 6-14 to defending
national champion St. Mary's
(35-9), Texas Woman's University (29-16-1) scored four runs
in the bottom of the fifth inning to walk away with a 4-1 victory
in game two, ending a five-game losing streak. Freshman pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) allowed
only six hits and one earned run in the nightcap, moving her
record to 13-6 on the season.
It felt like we had a monkey on our back for the past
five ball games because we were not playing very well. I was
at my wits end trying to figure out what to do, but I finally
told the players that it is up to them to get this team back
on the winning track, head coach Dianne Baker said. The
girls finally played well as a team in the second game tonight.
Stefani Easter called a good game at catcher and Amanda
pitched really well. This was a good win for us tonight and
hopefully it will give us a big boost heading into this weekend's
games at Abilene Christian.
TWU
started game one of the doubleheader off well as they scored
three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Courtney
Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas HS) led of with
a double and was brought home to score on a RBI-single by Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.). Amanda Arnold
(The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) came up to bat with
the bases loaded and connected on a RBI-single. Megan Helms
(Krum, TX/Krum H.S.) brought home the final score of
the inning when she scored Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson
C.C.) from third base with a single to left field. St.
Mary's scored two runs in the top of the second, then blew
the game open with seven more runs in the top of the third
inning. Kym Kling got things rolling when she doubled to centerfield,
scoring Tiffani Craft from first base. Kling scored two batters
later when Jennifer Survant reached base on a fielder's
choice. With the bases loaded, Pioneers' starting pitcher Dawn
England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) walked in two more runs,
making the score 3-6. Teri Moreno then stepped up to the plate
and delivered a bases-clearing double to left center field.
In
the bottom of the third inning, Jami Ingram (Richmond,
BC/Blinn College) blasted a two-run homerun over the
left center field fence to draw TWU within four, 5-9. After
both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, the Rattler's
scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to push their
lead to 5-14. TWU tried to start a two-out rally in the bottom
half of the inning when Sarah White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville
H.S.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring
a run. Courtney Martin flied out to center field for the
final out, ending the game after five innings, 6-14. Dawn
England recorded the loss, moving her record to 12-3 on the
season, by allowing nine runs on four hits while striking
out two in 2 1/3 innings of work. Devin Blew (Crowley,
TX/Crowley H.S.) came in for relief and allowed five
runs on six hits in 18 batters faced.
St. Mary's took an early 0-1 lead in game two when Jennifer
Survant hit a solo homerun over the left field fence in the
top of the second inning. The Pioneers were held scoreless
through the first four innings, then put four runs on the board
in the bottom of the fifth. Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro
College) batted in two runs when she connected on a double
to right field with the bases loaded. In the next at-bat, Collins
reached base on a throwing error by the St. Mary's pitcher,
allowing Martin to score from third base.
Boudreaux then scored on the same play when the catcher misplayed
the relay throw back to home plate. After allowing the homerun,
starting pitcher Amanda Chambless allowed only five more hits
the rest of the game to earn the 4-1 victory. Chambless finished
the game by allowing seven hits and one earned run with seven
strikeouts.
Up
next, the Pioneers hit the road for their fourth conference
series of the season as they face Abilene Christian
in a four game set on April 11-12 in Abilene.
Friday's doubleheader will start at 5:00 p.m. with Saturday's
games to start at 1:00 p.m.
