ANGELO STATE TAKES FIRST TWO GAMES FROM PIONEERS IN SOFTBALL

DENTON, TX—The No. 3 ranked team in the country looked just as advertised as Angelo State (35-5, 7-3 LSC) scored 20 runs off of 30 hits to win both games of their doubleheader against Texas Woman's University (28-13-1, 7-3 LSC), 8-3 and 12-4. With the two losses, the Pioneers and ASU draw into a tie for first place in the Lone Star Conference South Division standings at 7-3.

TWU put the first run on the scoreboard in game one after Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) singled to left field, allowing Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) to score from second base in the bottom of the first inning. The Rambelles quickly took the lead back in the top of the second inning, 1-5. Two runs scored when Flores misplayed a hard single by Melissa Rodriguez. Mandee Gamboa hit a RBI-double to left field in the next at-bat to score Rodriguez. Two batters later, Michelle Hoffman grounded out to the pitcher, but two runs scored on a throwing error by TWU first baseman Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The Colony HS). In the bottom of the fourth, Megan Helms (Krum, TX/ Krum H.S.) hit a RBI-single to left field, making the score 2-6. Cat Moreno moved the ASU lead to 2-7 when she led off the inning with a solo homerun that went over the scoreboard in centerfield. The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they would come as ASU's Claudia Lopez earned the win when she retired the final three batters in the seventh. Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) had her 10-game winning streak snapped as she allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings pitched in the 3-8 loss.

The Rambelles scored three runs in the first inning of game two and never looked back. After Alexis Wing led off the game with a single up the middle, Michelle Hoffman hit a two-run homer over the left center field fence. Andrea Payan batted in the third run in the inning when she singled to center field, allowing Cat Moreno to score from third base. ASU added another run in the top of the third, then TWU got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) hit a RBI-ground out to the second baseman. Stephanie Kirkpatrick gave the Rambelles a 1-6 in the top of the fourth when she connected on a two-RBI single. With the score 2-6 after 4 1/2 innings, the Pioneers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ingram brought Teresa Flores across the plate when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Amanda Arnold then brought Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) home in the next at-bat when she singled to the ASU third baseman. ASU put the game away in the top of the sixth when they scored five runs, making the score 4-11. They added another run in the top of the seventh, then relief pitcher Lopez retired the final three TWU batters to earn the 4-12 victory. Chambless (12-5) recorded her second loss of the day when she allowed four runs on six hits in three innings of work.

Up next, the Pioneers continue their conference series with Angelo State on Saturday, April 5 with their double header to start at 1:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
