PIONEER SOFTBALL MOVES
WIN STREAK TO NINE GAMES
DENTON, TXTexas
Woman's University (28-11-1) opened an early 5-0 lead in
their first game against Northwood
University (12-13) while starting pitcher Amanda Chambless
(Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) held the Knights
to just one run as the Pioneers held on for a 5-1 victory.
TWU then rolled to a 13-5 victory in five innings to sweep
the double header. With the two victories, the Pioneers move
their win streak to nine games and also push their home record
to 15-1 on the season.
After
Amanda Chambless retired the first three Northwood batters,
TWU got on the board quickly in the first inning when Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) hit a RBI-double
to left field with two runners on base. Two batters later, Jami
Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) connected with a
sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX/Navarro College) from third base. Amanda Arnold
(The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) ended the scoring in
the first inning when she hit a RBI-single to left center field
to score Flores. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning,
then the Pioneers added two more runs in the third to extend
their lead to 5-0. Flores led off the inning with a triple,
giving her nine for the season and eclipsing the old school
record of eight that she set in 2002. Jennifer Collins (Forney,
TX/Grayson C.C.) batted Flores in with a RBI-double in
the next at-bat. A batter later, Arnold had her second RBI
of the game when she singled to right field, scoring Ingram
from second base. Chambless pitched six scoreless innings,
but Northwood broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh
when Kelly Ayala reached on a fielder's choice with the bases
loaded, scoring Teena Martin from third. Chambless struck the
final batter out to earn the 5-1 victory, moving her record
to 12-3 on the season. She allowed one run on seven hits and
struck out five batters.
It
was much of the same in game two of the doubleheader as TWU
built a 5-0 lead after two innings. The score was 1-0 in
the bottom of the second when Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum
H.S.) tripled to center field, scoring two runs. Sarah
White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville H.S.) added another
run when she reached on a fielder's choice to first base, scoring
Helms from third. Boudreaux connected on a sacrifice
bunt two batters later to score White, giving TWU their 5-0
lead after two innings. The Pioneers kept the scoring spree
going as they added three more runs in the bottom of the third,
moving their lead to 8-0. After Northwood added a score in
the top of the fourth, TWU put the game out of reach with three
runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ingram singled
to center field with two runners on base, scoring both and
pushing the Pioneer lead to 10-1. Arnold added the third
run when she grounded out to the second baseman, driving in
Ingram.
TWU starting pitcher Devin
Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley H.S.) was two outs away from
ending the game after 4 1/2 innings when Northwood loaded
the bases on three straight
singles. Ayala then stepped up to the plate and delivered
a grand slam over the right center field fence, closing the
gap to 11-5. Blew retired the final two batters to get out
of the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Boudreaux
hit a two-RBI double to win the game for TWU 13-5. Blew earned
the win and moved her record to 4-6 after allowing five runs
on nine hits while striking out three.
The
Pioneers recorded two triples on the night, giving the team
23 for the season and setting a new single season school
record. They also recorded seven doubles in the second game
of their double header, one shy of the school mark set on Feb.
24, 1998 versus Sul Ross State. Helms was a single and
a homerun away from hitting for the cycle as she finished game
two by going 2 for 3 from the plate with two RBI, two runs
scored, a double and a triple. Ingram had a good day from
the plate as well, going a combined 4 of 5 with four runs scored,
four RBI and her 10th double of the season.
Up
next, the Pioneers host Lone Star Conference South Division
rival Angelo State in a four-game series on Friday
and Saturday, April 4-5. Friday's doubleheader will
begin at 5:00 p.m. with Saturday's games to start at 1:00 p.m.
