PIONEERS
SWEEP EASTERN NEW MEXICO SERIES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT
SEASON
DENTON,
TXTexas
Woman's University (26-11-1, 7-1 LSC) scored 22 runs off
of 24 hits in a doubleheader
sweep of Eastern New Mexico (21-20, 1-7 LSC) at
Pioneer Field Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers won game one
by the score of 13-3, then routed the Zias, 9-1, in game two
to sweep the season series with their conference rivals for
the second time in two years. TWU hit three homeruns in game
one, setting a new school record for most homeruns hit in a
single game.
Eastern
New Mexico took an early 1-0 lead to begin the day when Dawn
Murray singled down the left field line, scoring
Nikki Gay from third base. TWU quickly tied the game in the
bottom half of the inning when leadoff batter Sascha Taylor
(Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) scored on a throwing
error by the Zias' catcher as she was trying to pick off Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) stealing second
base. Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) moved
the score to 3-1 in favor of TWU in the bottom of the third
when she singled to left field with the bases loaded, scoring
two runs. Later that same inning, Kerbi Kollman (Mountain
View, AK/Mountain View H.S.) scored TWU's fourth run
when she crossed home plate from another error by the Zias
shortstop trying to make a play on a hard hit ball by Megan
Helms (Krum, TX/Krum H.S.).
The Pioneers added four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning,
highlighted by Ingram's seventh homerun of the season, to blow
the game open 8-1. After the Zias closed the gap to 8-3 in
the top of the fifth, TWU added a run in the bottom half of
the inning when Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) hit
a RBI-single to center field, scoring Taylor from third base.
The Pioneers finished the game after six innings when they
added four runs in the bottom of the inning. In the third at-bat, Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston State) hit her first homerun
of the season, a solo shot that went over the right center
field fence. Boudreaux then stepped up to the plate with two
runners on base and sent the second homerun of the inning over
the center field fence, ending the game with the score of 13-3. Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) recorded
her ninth straight victory and moved her record to 11-3 on
the season after she allowed three runs off of nine hits and
struck out one in 27 batter's faced.
TWU starting pitcher Devin
Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley H.S.) didn't give Eastern New Mexico much of a chance
to win game two of their double header as she allowed only
one run in six full innings. TWU took an early lead in the
bottom of the first inning when Jennifer Collins ran out
a bunt towards the first baseman, allowing Courtney Martin
(Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) to score from third
base. Two batters later, Megan Helms singled down the left
field line with the bases loaded to score two more runs.
Eastern New Mexico got on the board in the top of the second
inning when Jessica Cook singled to center field with the
bases loaded, scoring Tracey Jordan from third base. The
score was 6-1 to in favor of TWU in the bottom of the sixth
when they ended the game with three runs. Collins batted
in two runs when she hit a single to center field, scoring
Boudreaux and Martin. In the next at-bat, Ingram
crunched the game-winning RBI to right center field, scoring
Collins from second base and ending the game, 9-1. Blew moved
her record to 3-6 on the season with the victory. She faced
25 batters and allowed five hits while striking out three.
Ingram
became the new single-season homerun record holder for TWU
when she connected with her seventh homerun of the season
in game one of the double header. She
eclipsed the old mark set by Teresa Flores (Corpus
Christi, TX/ Miller H.S.) and Leah Smith set last season.
Collins had a big day at the plate as well, going
4 for 6 with three runs scored and five RBI. With the series
sweep, the Pioneers move their home record to 13-1 on the season
and have won 14 of their last 16 games. Fifteen of the team's
final 19 games will be played at home.
Up
next, the Pioneers host Northwood in a doubleheader on Tuesday,
April 1 at 5:00 p.m. Then on Wednesday,
TWU plays Cameron in a make-up game starting at
5:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
