PIONEERS
EDGE OUT TWO CLOSE VICTORIES OVER
EASTERN NEW MEXICO
DENTON,
TXAmanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) pitched
six scoreless innings, allowing just one run on six hits
to help lead Texas Woman's
(24-11-1, 5-1 LSC) to a 2-1 victory over Eastern
New Mexico (21-18, 1-5 LSC) in game one of their
conference doubleheader. In game two, the Pioneers came
back from four runs down in the fourth inning to sweep the
doubleheader with a 6-5 victory.
We started off both games tonight very slow. Luckily,
Eastern New Mexico didn't seem to be very motivated and we
were able to hang around and pull off a victory in game one
of our double header. Amanda Chambless pitched a great game
and was able to get in their heads with her change-up, head
coach Dianne Baker said. In the second game, they scored
early and we were playing sloppy, but the girls fought their
way back for the win. We are very limited on our pitching staff
right now, but Amanda Chambless and Devin Blew are throwing
well and keeping us in a lot of games. We are just trying to
score enough runs to win ball games at this point in the season.
Sascha
Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) put
the first run on the board for TWU in the bottom of the first
inning when she scored on a passed ball by the Eastern New
Mexico catcher. After leaving two runners stranded in the second
inning, the Pioneers pushed their lead to 2-0 when Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX/ Navarro College) scored on the
second passed ball of the game. Chambless held the Zias
to just two hits in the first three innings, but Kim Barajas
ended the scoreless streak in the top of the fourth when she
hit a solo homerun over the right field fence. Chambless retired
the final three batters in the fourth and allowed just three
more hits the rest of the way to record the 2-1 victory. She
finished the game with one earned run and two strikeouts in
seven innings of work.
Eastern
New Mexico took the lead in game two when Boudreaux misplayed
a single hit into center field by Dawn Murray, allowing
Kim Barajas to score from second base. They added to their
lead in the top of the third inning when Barajas hit a two-RBI
single to right field with the bases loaded, making the score
3-0. In the next at-bat, Dawn Murray hit a sacrifice fly to
center field, scoring Jessica Cook. TWU finally got on the
board in the bottom of the third when Sarah White (Lewisville,
TX/Lewisville H.S.) scored from third base on an illegal
pitch by Maegan Rhoten. After Eastern New Mexico went three
up, three down in the top of the fourth, the Pioneers regained
the lead in the bottom half of the inning by scoring four runs
on only one hit. Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake
Dallas H.S.), who was pinch running for Jennifer Collins
(Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.), stole third base, then scored
on an error by the Zias' catcher. Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum
H.S.) made the score 3-4 when she hit a RBI-single to right
field. After Lydia Turner (Great Falls, MT/Great Falls
H.S.) struck out for the second out of the inning, White
reached base on an error by the second baseman, allowing Amanda
Arnold (The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) to score from
third base. Sascha Taylor connected with a sacrifice bunt in
the next at-bat, scoring Helms from third base and giving TWU
a 5-4 lead.
Eastern New Mexico added a run in the top of the sixth inning
Nikki Gay singled down the left field line, scoring Elizabeth
Navarro from second base and tying the game at 5 apiece. After
the Pioneers went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings,
Jennifer Collins hit a single to right field with two outs,
scoring Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) from
second base and winning the game for TWU, 6-5. Amanda Chambless
earned the victory when she came in to relieve Devin Blew with
the score tied in the top of the sixth inning. With the two
wins, Chambless now moves her record to 10-3 on the season.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their conference series with
Eastern New Mexico as they host the Zias in a doubleheader
on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
