PIONEERS
LEAVE TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE WITH 3-1 SERIES WIN IN
SOFTBALL
DENTON,
TXTexas A&M
University-Kingsville (20-9, 1-3 LSC) scored three runs
in the bottom of the third
inning and held onto a 4-5 win in game one of their double
header with Texas Woman's University (20-11-1, 3-1 LSC).
The Pioneers rebounded in game two as they scored 11 runs off
of 15 hits and sailed to a 11-2 win to close their series with
the Javelinas. Stefani Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston St.) had
a monstrous day at the plate in game two as she went 3 for
4 with four RBI, a double and her first homerun of the season.
Amanda Chambless really pitched well this weekend by
keeping Texas A&M-Kingsville off balance during her three
appearances. The girls pulled it together and played some great
softball to beat a very good opponent on their own field, head
coach Dianne Baker said. I am very proud of how our team
played this weekend and excited about getting out to such a
good start in conference. We are just going to continue play
our brand of softball and hopefully upset some people along
the way.
The
Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead in game one after they scored
two runs on one hit. Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen
F. Austin) crossed home plate first when she scored on
a wild pitch. Two batters later, Jami Ingram (Richmond,
BC/Blinn College) knocked in Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX/Navarro College) from third base with a ground out
to first base. Ria Hoog brought Texas A&M-Kingsville within
one run in the bottom of the first inning after she singled
through the right side, scoring Kelli Huston. After the Pioneers
added a run in the top of the third, the Javelinas took control
of the game by scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom
half of the inning. TWU's Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The
Colony H.S.) hit a RBI-double in the top of the fifth inning
to knot the game at 4-4, but that would be all the runs that
the Pioneers could muster for the rest of the game. Robyn Jensen
came to bat for Texas A&M-Kingsville in the bottom of the
sixth inning and hit a double to center field, scoring the
winning run. Jensen then pitched the final inning and retired
all three TWU batters to record the 5-4 win. Dawn England
(Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) started the game and allowed
four runs on six hits and was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. Devin
Blew (Crowley, TX/ Crowley H.S.) came in for relief and
pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three
hits and recording the loss.
Game
two was tied 1-1 after three innings of play before the Pioneers
took control of the game with 10 runs in the final
four innings. Amanda Arnold recorded her second RBI of the
game when she scored Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/
Miller H.S.) from third base with a single to center field
in the top of the fourth inning. Stefani Easter stepped up
to
the plate in the top of the fifth and blasted a solo homerun
down the left field line. Later that same inning, Nikki Boudreaux
hit a triple, then scored on a passed ball to make the score
4-1 after five innings. Easter blew the game wide open in the
top of the seventh when she hit a double with the bases loaded,
scoring all three runs and moving the score to 8-1 in favor
of the Pioneers. In the next at-bat, Sarah White hit a double
of her own to score Easter from second base. The Pioneers added
two more runs before the inning ended to make the score 11-1.
The Javelinas scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning,
but it was too little too late as starting pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) retired
the final two batters to record the 11-2 victory. Chambless
moved her record to 8-3 on the season by allowing only two
runs on six hits.
Up next, the Pioneers return home to host three straight double
headers, starting with the University of Texas-Dallas on Wednesday,
March 26 at 5:00 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, March 28-29,
TWU hosts Eastern New Mexico in their second conference series
of the 2003 season. Friday's games will begin at 5:00 p.m.
with Saturday's to start at 1:00 p.m.
