TO OPEN CONFERNCE
PLAY
DENTON,
TXTexas
Woman's University (19-10-1, 2-0 LSC) scored four runs in
the final two innings to record
a 5-2 victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville (19-8,
0-2 LSC) in game one of their double header, then held on
for a slim 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) recorded
both wins on the day as she pitched a total of 12 innings and
gave up four earned runs off of nine hits.
Texas
A&M-Kingsville
put the first score on the board in game one when Kassie
Rezza scored on an error by TWU third
baseman, Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.). The
Pioneers quickly answered back in the top of the second when Kerbi
Kollman (Mountain View, AK/Mountain View H.S.), who was
pinch running for Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College), scored
on a wild pitch. Both teams went scoreless during the third
and fourth innings, but the Javelinas broke the 1-1 tie in
the bottom of the fifth when Kelli Huston hit an RBI-single
to center field, scoring Rezza from second base. Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) knotted the game
up in the top of the sixth when she scored off of a RBI-single
by Amanda Arnold (The Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.). Stefani
Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston St.) gave TWU the lead for
good, 3-2, when she singled to right field, scoring Ingram
from third base. The Pioneers added two more runs in the top
of the seventh when Flores hit a two-RBI single to right field.
Starting pitcher Amanda Chambless retired the final six Texas
A&M-Kingsville batters to record the 5-2 victory. Chambless
allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight in 28
batters faced.
Nikki
Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) gave
TWU the early lead in game two after she struck out, but reached
first base on a passed ball. She stole two bases, then was
brought home to score when Jennifer Collins singled to right
field. The Pioneers didn't record another run until the top
of the fifth inning when they added two scores. Sascha Taylor
(Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) led off the inning
with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Teresa
Flores came up to bat and singled to left field, scoring Taylor.
In the next at-bat, Collins reached base on an error by the
Javelina right fielder, allowing Flores to score and give TWU
a 3-0 lead. Kingsville added a run in the bottom
of the fifth inning and another in the bottom of the sixth,
but relief pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/ Graham H.S.) got
the final three Javelina batters to ground out to preserve
the 3-2 victory. Starter Chambless earned her
second win of the day and moved her record to 7-3 on the season
after she allowed two runs on three hits while striking out
five in five innings of work. England pitched two innings and
allowed only two hits and one walk.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their conference series with
Texas
A&M-Kingsville as they play a double header on Saturday,
March 22 beginning at noon.
