PIONEER SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH ST. EDWARD'S

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman's University (17-10-1) erased a four-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to win game one 7-6, but the Pioneer bats went silent in the second game as St. Edward's (16-12) scored three runs in the sixth to walk away with a 1-4 win. Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) spurred the TWU comeback in game one as she went 2 for 3 from the plate with three RBIs.

St. Edward's put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning when Tracie Tirres blasted a three-run homerun over the left center field fence. The Pioneers finally answered back in the bottom of the third inning when Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) scored on a passed ball. In the next at-bat, Collins recorded her first RBI of the game when she sacrificed to the shortstop with two runners on, allowing Nikki Boudreaux to score from third base. After St. Edward's added three more runs in the top of the fifth to move ahead 2-6, TWU began their rally in the bottom of the inning. Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) hit a RBI-single to score a run, then was brought around to score when Collins grounded out to the shortstop. Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum H.S.) recorded the final run of the inning when she singled to center field, scoring Kerbi Kollman (Mountain View, AK/Mountain View H.S.) from third base. Sascha Taylor tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, 6-6, when she scored on a RBI-single from Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.). Collins doubled to right field in the next at-bat to score Flores, giving TWU their 7-6 win. Starting pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) retired the final three Hilltopper batters in the seventh inning to record her fourth victory of the season. She moved her record to 4-3 by pitching seven full innings and allowing six runs on five hits while striking out one.

It was a pitchers dual for the first five innings as Lyndsey Vasek of St. Edward's and Devin Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley H.S.) of TWU allowed just seven combined hits. The Hilltoppers took a 0-1 lead in the second inning when Rachel Frost hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Tracie Tirres from third base. St. Edward's added three runs in the top of the sixth inning, highlighted by Tiffany Tirres' homerun. Jennifer Collins recorded her fourth RBI of the day when she brought Flores home on a ground out to second base, but that was all the scoring that TWU could muster in a 1-4 loss. Vasek earned the victory by pitching seven full innings and allowing just one run on six hits while striking out seven. Blew recorded her fifth loss of the season by allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out one batter. Chambless came in for relief in the seventh and did not allow a hit in three batters faced.

Up next, the Pioneers enjoy a couple of days off before they host New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday, March 19 in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
