PIONEER SOFTBALL MOVES HOME
WINNING STREAK TO SIX GAMES
DENTON,
TXJunior Dawn
England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) pitched her second
consecutive complete game shutout to help lead Texas Woman's
University (16-9-1) to a 5-0 win
over Newman (2-2) in game one of their double
header at Pioneer field Wednesday night. In the nightcap,
the Pioneers had to come from a three-run deficit in the
sixth inning to record their sixth straight home victory
of the season, 9-6. Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller
H.S.) had another big game at the plate as she combined
to go 5 for 6 with five runs scored, four RBI and two doubles.
I am proud of the way this team played in both games.
They hit the ball well and controlled the first game, then
had to come from behind to take the second game. This team
is really hitting the ball well and that is fun with such a
young squad, head coach Dianne Baker said. If I
gave out stars at the end of each game, Jami Ingram and Nikki
Boudreaux would get my vote because they would not let our
team die in the second game. We were down for most of the game
and the first two pitchers that Newman used were keeping our
hitters off balanced with some junk balls. The last two pitchers
that came into the ball game threw hard and our hitters started
connecting with extra base hits and that propelled us to a
win.
The
Pioneers began game one very well as Teresa Flores hit her
first double of the game to get on base, then was brought
around to score after Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson
C.C.) hit a RBI-single up the middle of the infield. One
batter later, Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College) put
the second score on the board when she doubled to center field,
scoring Collins. TWU went scoreless in the second inning, then
added another run in the bottom of the third when Flores connected
with her second straight double, a shot that went over the
center fielder's reach and allowed Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX/Navarro College) to score from second base. Boudreaux
moved the TWU lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when she
hit a RBI-triple to center field. After Flores earned a walk
to get on base, Collins hit a triple of her own to score Flores
and give the Pioneers their 5-0 win. England had a perfect
game going through three innings until she allowed a walk in
the top of the fourth, but finished the game by allowing only
two hits while striking out four batters. England moves her
record to 11-2 on the season with six of those victories coming
as complete game shutouts.
Newman
broke out to an early 0-2 lead in the second game as they
loaded the bases with no outs and got two runners
across the plate before starting pitcher Devin Blew (Crowley,
TX/Crowley H.S.) got the final three batters in the inning
to ground out. TWU quickly answered back in the bottom of the
first when they scored three runs to take the lead. The Lady
Jets pitching staff combined to keep the Pioneers scoreless
through the next three innings while their hitters added four
more runs to take a commanding 3-6 lead after 4 1/2 innings
of play. The Pioneers began their rally in the bottom of the
fifth when Flores collected her second RBI of the night,
a single to center field which allowed Nikki Boudreaux to score
easily from third base. Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum H.S.) stepped
up to the plate three batters later and hit a hard single to
the shortstop, which scored Flores and made the score 5-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, Flores went to work again as she
hit another RBI-single to center field, allowing Courtney
Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) to cross the
plate and knot the game up at 6-6. Collins batted
in the game winning run as she double to right center field,
scoring Flores. TWU added two more runs in the sixth and relief
pitcher Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville
H.S.) allowed just one hit and kept the Lady Jets scoreless
through the final 3 2/3 innings to record the 9-6 victory.
Chambless
moved her record to 4-3 on the season with the game two win
and struck out two in 14 batters faced. Jennifer
Collins finished the double header by going 3 for 6 from the
plate with three runs scored, three RBI, a double and a triple
while Boudreaux recorded two triples, three runs scored,
a RBI and a stolen base. Taylor stole two more bases
to move her team-leading total to 21 on the season.
Up next, the Pioneers host St. Edward's University in their
third double header of the week on Friday, March 14 with a
start time of 1:00 p.m.
