SOFTBALL SWEEPS TEXAS WESLEYAN IN DOUBLEHEADER
DENTON, TXTexas
Woman's University (14-9-1) blew the doors off Texas Wesleyan
in the first game of
their double header as the Pioneers scored nine runs off of
nine hits to end the game after 4 1/2 innings of play, 9-0.
The second game was much closer as both teams got runners on
base, but could not bring them across the plate. TWU won the
game 3-1 with three separate runs in three different innings.
Junior Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) came
up big for TWU, going a combined 3 for 5 from the plate with
two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a triple.
We talked with the team about learning to trust one
another on the field and focusing on the game an inning at
a time and I think that helped tonight. The girls hit the ball
well in the first game and our defense was excellent, head
coach Dianne Baker said. In the second game, Texas Wesleyan's
pitcher did a nice job against us and threw some good rise
balls. We weren't as disciplined as we needed to be, but the
girls hit the ball at crucial times and Jennifer Collins gave
us an insurance run to help win the game. I am really thrilled
that Teresa Flores had a good night offensively. Teresa needed
a game where she could hit the ball well and that happened
tonight. I think this long home-stand will give us some momentum
heading into the second half of our season if we continue to
play as well as we did tonight.
The
Pioneers scored early and fast on Texas Wesleyan in game
one as TWU put four runs on the board in the bottom of the
first inning. Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/ Stephen F.
Austin) started the scoring when she crossed the plate
on a passed ball by Jennifer Perez. Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum
H.S.) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and
delivered a three-RBI double to left field, making the score
4-0. Teresa Flores made the score 5-0 in the bottom of the
third when she scored on the second passed ball of the night.
The Pioneers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning to put the game away. Starting pitcher Dawn England
(Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) did not allow a Lady Ram to
get past second base moved her record to 10-2 on the season
after she allowed only two hits in the complete-game shutout.
The scoreless victory was England's fifth of the season.
The
Pioneers were on the board first in game two after Sascha
Taylor stole two bases, then was batted home on a sacrifice
fly by Teresa Flores. Sarah White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville
H.S.) put TWU up 2-0 in the bottom of the second when she
hit a RBI-single to left field, scoring Amanda Arnold (The
Colony, TX/The Colony H.S.) from third base. Texas Wesleyan
began a rally in the top of the third when they scored one
run off of Pioneers' starting pitcher Devin Blew (Crowley,
TX/ Crowley H.S.). Amanda Chambless (Collinsville,
TX/Collinsville H.S.) came in for relief and got the
final two outs in the inning to keep TWU ahead, 2-1. Chambless
allowed just two hits in the final four innings and Jennifer
Collins (Forney, TX/ Grayson C.C.) added an insurance
run in the bottom of the fifth when she connected on an RBI-single
to left center field, giving the Pioneers the 3-1 victory.
Chambless earned the win after pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing
just three hits while striking out three in 17 batters faced.
Arnold
had a big night from the plate as she combined to go 4 for
6 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Collins finished 2
for 3 with a run scored and two RBI while Helms went 1-3
with a triple and three RBI. Taylor added three stolen bases
to move her team-leading total
to 19 on the season. TWU is now 14-9-1 on the season, 4-0 at
Pioneer Field.
Up
next, the Pioneers host Newman University in a double header
on Wednesday, March 12 at 5:00 p.m. After a day off, TWU will
play St. Edward's in their third doubleheader of
the week on Friday, March 14 with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
