PIONEER SOFTBALL DROPS BOTH
GAMES IN SECOND DAY OF TOURNAMENT
IRVING,
TXWashburn
(2-1) handed Texas Woman's University (10-9) a 1-0 loss to
finish pool play Saturday
morning in the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic.
When bracket play was announced, the Pioneers were placed in
the Silver Bracket as a No. 5 seed due to their two losses
in pool play. Wayne State (Mich.) used four runs
in the bottom of the fourth inning to give TWU their second
loss of the day, 4-1.
After we won the first ball game yesterday, our team
has been in a funk and I don't know what the problem is. We
have some kids that are really struggling on the defensive
side of the ball and we have not been hitting the ball well
in these last three games, head coach Dianne
Baker said. These
girls are playing like a young squad and as a coaching staff,
we hope they can dig themselves out of this problem.
It was a pitcher's dual in TWU's first game as Pioneers' starter Dawn
England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) and Lady Blues' starter
Katie Gregg allowed just six hits between them through the
first four innings. Washburn broke the scoreless tie in the
bottom of the fifth inning when Jackie Sells scored on an
error by TWU's third baseman, Jennifer Collins (Forney,
TX/Grayson C.C.). The Lady Blues' defense was
tough throughout the game as the Pioneers only reached second
base twice in six innings. TWU tried to rally in the seventh
with runners on first and second with two outs, but Gregg
got the final batter to ground out to record the 1-0 win.
Gregg earned the complete-game shutout by striking out six
and allowing just eight Pioneer hits. England recorded the
loss after going six innings and allowing one run on five
hits while striking out eight batters. England's record now
stands at 7-2 on the season.
In the second game, TWU took the lead against Wayne State
in the top of the third inning when Nikki Boudreaux (Orange,
TX/Navarro College) connected with her first triple of
the year to score Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville
H.S.) from second base. The Warriors answered right back
in the bottom of the third when Beth Berry doubled to left
center field with the bases loaded, scoring all three runs.
A batter later, Berry was brought around to score when Leah
Ondrovick hit a triple to right field. Wayne State starting
pitcher Meghan Misiak retired 12 of the final 13 TWU batters
to earn the 4-1 victory. Chambless (2-3) recorded the loss
by allowing four earned runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings
pitched.
Up next, the Pioneers face Eastern New Mexico at 10:15 a.m.
Sunday morning in the consolation side of the Silver Bracket.
If they win, TWU will face the winner of the game between Central
Oklahoma and Panhandle State at 2:45 p.m. at Southwest Park
in Irving, Texas.
